Being Conscious and the state of ones Conscience are they really the same?
I read sometime from @clayboyn blog not quite long and it triggered this in my head - the word conscience and consciousness. Are they really of the same philosophical background?
Maybe I should make my thought more visible to you. When we talk about being conscious or a state of consciousness, we refer to a psychological evaluation or reflection of one's life and behavioural pattern.
Sometimes, you hear people talk about how they wish their conscience can be as clean as a new born baby's conscience. Because they (the baby's conscience) are not capable of being conscious of their state. So they are practically in a dormant state not capable of doing or not doing. That is, a child is as innocent and harmless as a white snow. That led me to my proposition of - conscience and consciousness
.
Perhaps, let's take some reflection from the grammatical aspect of these words.
According to Merriam Webster dictionary, the word
Consciousness
is given as;
• “the quality or state of being aware
especially of something within oneself”
• “the state of being characterized by
sensation, emotion, volition, and thought”
Here is the given definition of
Conscience
according to the Merriam Webster dictionary;
• the sense or consciousness
of the moral goodness or blameworthiness of one's own conduct, intentions, or character together with a feeling of obligation to do right or be good.
From a scholarly point of view and with a philosophical approach, what is the correlation between the word Conscience and Consciousness
. How can you juxtapose the difference between them and if there are no difference, is it plausible to say that without ones conscience he or she cannot be conscious or vice versa.
