Map and analysis of ALL non-English European communities on Steemit with my advices about tags

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemians! I should welcome you here in many languages, but it would be a lot of welcomes so better not.

This is my biggest Steemit project so far and I have spent literally dozens of hours on this article so I’m hoping you would really like it. I’m going to look deeply into European non-English communities on Steemit, so I gathered information about 38 official languages from all European countries.

[tags cloud of European languages]

At first I wanted to create map of non-English European communities. I assumed it’s working mostly like in my community (Polish) or like in the biggest European communities (Spanish or German) - that people use mostly single tag in their non-English posts. But... it’s not that easy. Many languages don’t have communities and other languages are publishing posts under many different tags. So for my map I had to expand my search and that was just the beginning of many problems.

If you are here only for the map, here it is. But I’m hoping you will look at some of data below.

Bigger version of the same map

Data 101

But first let me explain something. I have used SQL database created by @arcange to find all posts in given language. It was made from start of Steemit till 17th May 2017. Headers of tables have been shortened for visual effect and here you have full explanation of them:

  • Tag: Name of tag in Steemit,
  • Posts in May: Amount of posts from 1st-17th May 2017,
  • Authors in May: Amount of authors from 1st-17th May 2017,
  • All posts: Amount of all posts till 17th May 2017,
  • All authors: Amount of all authors till 17th May 2017,
  • First post: Date of first language post in given tag,
  • Last post: Date of last language post in given tag.

Now it’s time to present each language one by one in alphabetic order:

No advices here. You should give advices to me not the other way. But... Just talk to the authors of posts without spanish tag.

Swedish

Official language in: Finland, Sweden
Native speakers: 9.2 million (2012)

Summary

There are only two Swedish posts on Steemit in May and there were also not so many posts before. With 3 tags and that amount of posts it’s hard to say in what direction it will go.

BETTER NOT continue publishing with tag:

NOT suggested tags for the community:

  • English names of country: sweden (at least 46 non-Swedish posts in May),

Recognised minority language in: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Iraq, Kosovo, Macedonia, Romania

Summary

There are a lot of Turkish posts on Steemit and almost all of them have one tag. That’s really good and I have nothing to say - it’s a nice community.

Advices?

Do what you are doing. Maybe talk to authors with posts without tr tag.

Ukrainian

Summary

It looks like a community but it’s not... There are a lot of Ukrainian posts on Steemit in May but most of them don’t have language-like or country-like tags. And the rest of posts have tag with Ukrainian city. There is a lot of work here. What are you waiting for - work!

Wow, that was a lot of information. I hope you liked it :)
By the way - where are you from and what is your native language?

Wow great analysis - Bosnia, language - bosnian :)

Are you planning to start a community?

Maybe in future. I don't believe there is enough bosnians on steemit :)

it take some time to build a community, but you have to remember, that Steemit is for everyone! You can invite here everybody :)

Great (and hard work), @lukmarcus.
i am from Galiza (Europe) and my native language is Galego, from where born the Portuguese.
I'm tagging as #galego #Portugues, Although I need one tag who include all dialectal variants of this language (Brazilian, Portugués, galego and also the Portuguese Creoles from África.
The general term to define all the languages born from Galician is "lusofonía", but I agree with Aline Franzao that we should use #galeguia to avoid reminiscences of the imperialist past of Portugal.

Galician is not an official language in any country and it's listed as recognised regional language. But as far as I know there are some posts in Galician on Steemit.

Mmmm Well.... let's see ...
Galicia (Galiza) is a Country, but not a State and have two official languages: Galician and Spanish:

I think that it is more than a "regional" language.

  • " is an autonomous community of Spain and historic nationality under Spanish law.[1] Located in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula,"

  • Two languages are official and widely used today in Galicia: the native Galician, a Romance language closely related to Portuguese, with which it shares Galician-Portuguese medieval literature, and the Spanish language, usually known locally as Castilian. 56% of the Galician population speak Galician as their first language, while 43% speak more in Castilian

As galician I will be deeply grateful that the galician (official language, not regional) is included in the next revision of your article.

If you do not, we'll still having an official language for the rest of the world except in "Steemit Planet".
It will no matter. We will survive!!! 😉
(and don't worry. Already stopped. I would like you see it with our eyes.)

PS: Maintain this serious, critical and documented line of work:
Kind Regards from Galiza.

Galiza, Galicia, Galician

But this article is not about autonomous communities. Even on Galicia Wiki you can find information Country: Spain. Galicia is also not listed on List of sovereign states and dependent territories in Europe.

Maybe next time I will include some of the biggest communities like Galician :)

True:

Galiza is not a sovereign state.

This is a long (our) political battle.
It may be necessary to discuss the concepts of Country and State, but letś leave it for another time.

Thank you for your patiente.

This is for you. Posts till 25th May.

Galician

Official language in: Galicia (Spain)
Native speakers: 2.4 million (2012)

Summary

There are eight Galician posts on Steemit in May and only three of them have a language-like tag. There is some potential in creating a community, but they need more authors and better organisation. It’s hard to say in what direction it will go.

BETTER NOT continue publishing with tag:

  • combination of native names of languages: galego-portugues.

NOT suggested tags for the community:

  • English and native name of community: galicia (currently no non-Galician posts but they will come in future),
  • based on language ISO: gl (multiple meanings).

Continue publishing with tag:

  • native name of language: galego.

Other suggested tags for the community:

  • English name of language: galician,
  • native name of community: galiza,
  • based on language ISO: glg,
  • based on community TLD: gal.

A lot of thanks of all galician speakers.
I had already contemplated that the tag #galego-portugues was a bad idea.
Thanks Again.

I think, any language, independent of in which state it is spoken, should be listed as long ad there is a (considerable) user base in steemit.

It was hard enough to find posts in all official languages. I can't imagine doing the same for all European languages...

Great job, lukmarcus. I am new on Steemit. I am not familiar, how are non-english languages accepted here? Of course it's easier to write in my native language. In your extended article you have found one Slovenian (Slovene) post. How did you find it? I have no idea. Please, is it possible to provide me a link? :o

Hi Lukmarcus, I see a mistake in your categorisation of Irish.

Recognised minority language in: United Kingdom

Ireland is not in the UK. At least not in the last 90 years. It is a minority language in Ireland though as barely anybody here still speaks it unfortunately due to the 600 - 800 years that the UK did impose rule over Ireland.

Irish is a minority language in Northern Ireland, so it's a minority language in UK. I got my information from Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_language

Ah OK, I would consider that minority so small that I wouldn't have even considered it. It's mainly only spoken in the West of Ireland in rural areas.

Great article ! Iv started a greek community ! next month iv planned a flyer give away ! trying to bring more awareness about Steemit Platform in Greece

Just remember: tags are really important :)

Awesome work! I am surprised how interesting that was to read about different European communities :) Upvoted & Resteemed!

Thanks a lot!

Really great Analysis. I am intrigued about the Irish post. Ill have to find it. :)

WOW, great stats! Thank you!

Kawal dobrej roboty :)

Great job :) I bet it took a lot of time to prepare it.
