Why Does 30 min Curation Window Changed to 15 Mins? - HF20 Series

in #steemit6 years ago

Hey All

We've been all excited by the upcoming hardfork that will take place on September 25, 2018 11:00 EST (11 p.m. here in the Philippines). This is said to be the biggest hardfork Steemit has done because the changes and updates are carefully and thoroughly planned by @ned's so called - "All Star team" he has.

One of the important changes will be the change on the curation window. As most of us know, Steemit designed the platform that is also beneficial to curators who tremendously discovers content. Curators take part of the authors payout by roughly around 25-30% of the total based on my estimation.

My humble thoughts about this change is that because of the 30-minute curation window, it failed to get the activity of discovering contents that are of quality. I mean this is not the case, but the idea of users highly interactive in terms of discovering interesting contents that they know it will hit the trending page. With the current protocol, the 30 minute curation window seems to be lengthy enough for users who wanted to maximize curation rewards by waiting for the post to get the 30 minute mark. This also encourage users to just set autovotes on users they like, users that will get a lot of votes, or users that gets big payouts.

Thus, the new implementation of 15 min curation window will generally be a key to the community's interaction into finding gem posts that will surely become a hit. This will give power to human voters who are actively searching for valuable content in the platform. We hope to bring the interaction of discovering contents thru manual searching, I'm guessing this will be a big change or a start of a new change.

My Point of View

If they wish to increase the human interaction in the platform (Manual curation and no autovoting), it should be - no, it must be less than 15 minutes. I am guessing 7-minute curation window is really enough to increase engagement in the platform. This will encourage the community to consume content and reward the best post that exist.

But this is a great start of a new change :)

If you wish to take part of this discussion, feel free to comment your thoughts on this post. If you wish, please enlighten me into a deeper details why it was changed from 30 to 15 mins and why it should be lower than 15. :)

Hi @jassennessaj, I just want to ask the difference between voting in 30mins, 15mins and below 15mins. What is the effect of that to the curation rewards? Thank you

The closer you vote on the 15th minute, the bigger percentage of curation rewards you get. If you vote on the 15th minute, that means 100% of the curation rewards of your vote (and part of others vote who voted beyond 15 mins).

You can do that by ratio ang proportion.

  • If you vote on the 5th minute : 33% Curation rewards of your vote will be yours - 67% goes to the author
  • If you vote on the 10th minute : 67% Curation rewards of your vote will be yours - 33% goes to the author
  • If you vote on the 15th minute : 100% Curation rewards of your vote will be yours.

Thank you for explaining it clearly. I get the logic now :)

I'm happy it helped you @annazsarinacruz.
