@lpfaust wrote this article 6 months ago, and October 4 there will be a meetup in Highlands Ranch, CO of the beginning of this accelerator.

@rebele93 started this meetup group for the Boulder Area, for October 12

And @rebelmeow and I are having a get-together dinner time meetup at the Mercury Cafe, on October 26, at 7pm.

as above, so below

I would like to suggest that just because currency has been decentralized, and just because we can use it to trade at physical meetups for goods and services, that's not all that needs to change when we move from social media, behind the computer screen, to face-to-face.

Alternative Currency has been around for a long time...it's nothing new.

Ithaca Hours has been being used as an alternative currency for Ithaca, NY for over 20 years, so reading up on how those folks have done that face-to-face is available on this website.

Wayne Walton of Breckenridge, CO, introduced Mountain Hours to Breckenridge in 2012, based on Ithaca Hours, and it worked... but now it's gone too - why?

I assert that it is communication. We all can get along pretty well online here - although there have been some all out brawls and downvoting people off of Steemit... we might even be so arrogant to think that we are so cool here on Steemit that we all will automatically "get along". Don't fool yourselves! You will be amazed how quickly our new sought after friendships can turn to shit quickly... even though it's life or death for us to live and work together...

Here's what has worked in the past, and still does work for Food Not Bombs, Occupy now turned to Denver Homeless Outloud, The Rainbows, as well as innumerable others:

Consensus Decision-Making

Consensus Communication... so that leadership is decentralized and each member of the group has an equal opportunity to participate. Hierarchical leadership such as "Robert's Rules" or just plain old one or a few people trying to lead - has failed to work. But we don't really know any other way. We have been trained since birth to listen to our parents, teachers, bosses - or to fight them. So how do we learn to get along using horizontal leadership and communication? It does not come naturally to us and is something that needs to be learned.

I have been using forms of Consensus Communication for many years with the most bull-headed and the most meek people together in groups, and it works to build a form of unity that is not to be found anywhere else. Communicating this way in a group, although it does require incredible patience, creates trust among members that is unparalleled.

Hierarchical Leadership Fails

If everyone turns to a single person to lead them - eventually that person will topple from the tower of perfection and the there will be dissension in the group. Natural Law proves that there is no such thing as "authority" - so how does a group accomplish something together? Equal participation, using principles.

History

The history of this sort of communication goes back to The Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Quakers.

The Haudenosaunee Confederacy brought together many warring tribes to work together successfully. Let us take the time and look back to history to find a way to also get along with each other that does not rely simply on digital currency.

I would like to be a part of a flourishing face-to-face community, but we must face the facts - this requires putting egos and pride aside, and learning patience and tolerance. Not our strong suit as we grow more and more mechanistic and further away from our humanity.

Super post. Upvoted.

I'm going to see if I can make it to the Mercury Cafe on the 26th. Personally I'm happy to see all the different meetups happening and I'm hoping we can see each run in their own manner.

At some point I'd love to have a virtual meetup in the chat room as well to begin to see about pulling together moderators (if anyone is so inclined) to transition people in more easily and build the community in a more frictionless manner.

I love what's happening in The Colorado Steemit Community right now.

It could work, it's certainly worth a try.

Hi @amberyooper - what exactly do you mean here? That using concensus could work to decentralize power and communication?

Consensus communication could certainly work to decentralize the power structure, if it was implemented properly. I'm sure there would be resistance to it, as you said, egos get involved very quickly when trying to change things.

Perhaps...unless it was implemented right away. That's why I am bringing it up now, before any of the meetups actually happen - of course people will probably try to do without it because it is difficult and requires patience, but at least they will know that itis there for when systems start to break down, if they want it to succeed, they might turn to it. It has a proven success rate - and I know, because I use it regularly.

thank you for sharing friends

It's nice that there are different pods popping up so that we have multiple locations and opportunities for people to connect. This definitely offers some benefits, especially with regard to personalities meshing within groups.

What a great time to be here! I'm excited for what is being created here.
