The Top 3 Mistakes of My First Month on Steemit - Tips for Minnows

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

These are my top three mistakes made during my first month on Steemit. I know many minnow newbies like me would rather learn from my mistakes rather than repeat them, so here goes!

Number 3: Getting Hooked on the Money Game

It is easy to get wrapped up in how much money you are making when on Steemit because, well frankly, the money comes pouring in, or so it seems. Of course, some may look at my wallet and chuckle at how little SBD and steem I have earned in my first five weeks, but considering I started from zero and currently sit at $350 + in my wallet, I feel rich. I have literally increased my value on here by over 300%. I am no fan of data, but those are some good numbers. I certainly don't see my bank account increasing at such a fast rate. It just seems to go down. Steemit is the way. When we minnow newbies see how much is to be made off the block chain, it is easy to get caught up in the numbers. But, getting caught up in the amount that your wallet increases, moment after moment, well that is a slippery slope of obsession. My mistake was to not realize this sooner. Steemit is about building community and paying it forward ... not pocketing it all. Focus on building the community instead.

Number 2: Forgetting to Make Friends Not Just Followers

During your first few weeks on Steemit, you quickly learn that it is very important to be connected to many other people if you hope to maximize your earning and develop a positive experience online. It is tempting to jump into the pattern of fishing for followers and chasing whales; hopping from comment section to comment section following people without getting to know them. Or, we pay for a bot to fill our blog with attractive numbers, but then find ourselves without genuine followers to interact with. This is not the platform for that. On Steemit, it is important to be genuine. Truly read someone's writing and consider the effort they put in to their art, blog, or video. Respond individually with true care and concern. My mistake was to not realize this soon enough. I should have started building my community from Day 1. I am thankful now for so many wonderful individuals that I have connected with on this platform! I am especially thankful to have my daughter @prettydecent join Steemit. She is connecting to many amazing people, as well.

Number 1: Not Finding Steemit Sooner!

My number 1 mistake is that I did not join Steemit earlier. I have spent the last year fighting the urge to completely dissociate myself from social media. I had heard of Steemit and assumed it was just another black hole of trolls. I was wrong! I certainly should have jumped on the Steemit Train much earlier! I am so encouraged by the level of respect and compassion I have found in the people who make up this block chain. What a refreshing surprise. My bad for not heading over sooner! Knowing that now just gives me the will to keep on steeming on!

I hope you learn from my mistakes and make the most of the Steemit platform today! Do you have any ideas to add to this list? Add them to the comments below!

Blessings!

Thanks for this @gatorlynne. Very encouraging to noobs like me. When did you start here?

Hi @elysolano I started in the middle of December. I received my first payout on Christmas Day. You? I hope you enjoy this community! Good luck to you. Blessings

Wow! My first post went up yesterday hahaha.

That's a start! You are moving up quick! Blessings!

Yeah, I wish I'd found Steemit sooner. Oh to be a whale! :)

Oh, to be a whale! Lol I count you as one of my dearest connections on here. Thank you. Blessings

Thanks! The part of making friends and not just followers is what I like most about this social network. I like your post.

Thanks so much. Best of luck to you on here. I have found many wonderful people. Blessings and following!

I've been here a while now. I can attest that's good advice! Great post!

Thank you! And, thank you for all your support and encouragement over the last month. It hasn’t gone unnoticed. Blessings!

Welcome to steemit and thank you very much for your follow!

I have written very recently a few steemit unwritten rules - tips that I myself learned by research :)

Did you know that you are not supposed to make more than 4 posts per day? (comments not included)

Some of the new users do not know that they cannot just copy paste information from internet, so plagiarism is very often :)

I will be happy to follow your journey too, steem on!

I will certainly check out your unwritten rules blog. I did not know that about 4 posts, but it makes sense. Quality over quantity is always a good rules. Thanks for connecting! Blessings

In regards to making friends,I also HIGHLY recommend finding a community on DIscord. There are so many that help and guide new steemians.

SO MANY more... but every little bit helps

Thank you so much for the advice and connections. I was looking into a discord. I have never joined one before but want to check it out. I feel like an old fogie on here with all these apps and chats, but little by little I am getting it, with the help of folks like you. Thanks you! Blessings

I was on steemit for about a month before I finally went to Discord. It was a game changer. SO much support there and so many steemians I never would have found or connected with.

I'm the writer for @qurator and a moderator for a homesteading and gardening group there. It is really a plethora of info and activity

Thanks again! I just signed up for discord and used the Q link from your blog to join. I will certainly check it out. That is great that you do homesteading. I am a stones throw from retirement and that is one of my dreams. I look forward to following you. Blessings.

That's great!
We have a wide array of gardeners, homesteaders, DIYers, etc in the group

People just have to use Steemit, the same way they use Facebook. Follow people you are interested in, and if you see something you like, upvote it. If we remove the monetary side of Steemit, I think it is still much better than Facebook. At least here we can publically compile and share our thoughts, and engage in good conversations, while meeting new and exciting people from around the globe :)

That is a great way to think of it! And, you are right. With or without the monetary side, Steemit beats Facebook hands down. Glad to have connected with you and very much appreciate you keeping up with my blog. Many blessings

Thanks for the explanation, I learned a lot of information. I followed. I am curious about your other writings. :)

Thanks! Good luck on here. Following. Blessings
