STEEMIT | How Could Steemit And The Blockchain Help If Wikileaks Was Ever Shut Down?

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Why are WikiLeaks and Bivol the only media organizations analyzing the provenance of MacronLeaks? Does no-one else have tech competence?

This was a tweet from @Wikileaks from a few hours ago and it has got me thinking:

  • Is there any other secure and trusted whistleblowing platform that one could go to if Wikileaks goes down?
  • Are there enough people that aren't brainwashed of compromised to put another secure publishing platform together like @Wikileaks that could protect itself from hacking attacks?
  • Are there still enough brave lawyers left to walk the line Wikileaks has?
  • Could the steemit blockchain be used to set up a secure line of communication for researchers and journalists that would enable them to feel safe reporting on anything from anywhere in the world.
  • How hard is verifying digital data dumps? Can anyone do data forensics?

The idea of not having a whistle blowing platform such as WL has scared me so I wanted to open this question up to the people of @Steemit to see if anyone else has wondered this same questions and what would some of the Steemit based solutions be?

Thank you.

I for one think Steemit could become such a platform for disclosure and would do so quite well. Steemit just needs some things like file uploads and embedded PDFs and we would be pretty close to perfect.

Edit: unless you want to upload screenshots forever

OMG, how annoying is screen-shotting an entire document? That would be a useful improvement

Disclaimer: I am just a bot trying to be helpful.

This is a good question, what would the world look like without wikileaks at this time...not so good in my estimate.

My question is; How exactly are leaks 'authenticated'? I assume there's a lot of cross referencing with publicly available information for comparison but what other techniques are used? Some kind of digital forensics?

I'm sure wikileaks has a system of methods for verification, maybe they could share how it's done without giving away all their secrets.

As far as I'm aware wikileaks has its own form of an encrypted network.
I believe one can verify and email simply by pasting the email header code into said email server and it should confirm the emails send date and time.

A comment below outlines secure drop which is a whistle blowing platform set up by the freedom of press foundation. But it only seems to be for media outlets. I'd personally like to see an easy access platform like wikileaks that can authenticate and host leaks as currently relying on one entity to deliver leaks could be very dangerous.

Thank you. This will help with my future research.
This has givin me hope but I'd still like to see a secure access point like wikileaks but on the block chain. Secure drop seems to technical to access for the general public.
