Bandwidth issues and auto-generated posts

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

Due to recent bandwidth issues, lots of minnows having problems interacting Steem blockchain. Powering up is not cheap at the moment with the current STEEM valuations and we cannot grow healthy with a limitation like that.

Manhattan also has traffic issues but the police don't force poor drivers out of the traffic. (Source)

This issue leads questioning of auto-generated posts at Steem blockchain. Lots of users put auto-generated content constantly to the chain:

  • Price data for X (We have lots of them, even most of them are duplicated)
  • Daily/Hourly posts stats of STEEM
  • Bot Usage Report
  • ...

All of these stats/data can be stored/presented in web apps in a separate database.

The king has no clothes

I don't want to point fingers to anyone but even well-known witnesses putting this kind of content into the chain and nobody gives a shit about it. (Spam comments, no interaction but self-votes and auto-trail votes.)

Bandwidth limitations are here because storing social media data in a blockchain is expensive and we should avoid bad minded people flooding the chain with spam - so why not use the chain responsibly?

Sort:

I think the issue isn't really the people, I mean steem is nowhere near the success it deserves, but if it can't scale to handle spam, how will it handle 10x the users (and thus 10x the spam) ? Imo, It's not the people's fault, it's the tech who can't scale to handle all the people in it.

There will always be spammers, and we can't really mitigate it unless the censor-free blockchain becomes the censored blockchain.

Another thing I've been wondering about with the node requirements going up and up... is a deep freeze feature of sorts for old posts with no (or few) pull requests... Storing them in a side chain or something else so they are there when needed , but keep the requirements of the witness nodes on the lighter side..

I remember reading an article about Facebook having issues while scaling and a deep freeze style system being the resolution.. food for thought.

This is a great line. I recently flagged a number of people who are posting stolen copyright newspaper articles. I will use it as another reason to explain why that is bad.

Aggreed,
I think with limitation, user have consider to use their bandwidth wisely.
Such as not follow every one, not comment every post, not resteem every content.

I have write my experiance too about this matter. Thanks for share

For anyone having problems with STEEM bandwidth, you can look up your current bandwidth at https://steemd.com/@account_name

I agree that much of what is posted is redundant, but we can't block people from posting what they want. The internet never complains of redundant articles and so if Steemit doesn't live by it, people will be reluctant to join the platform.
What's the use of a platform that can't scale?

Good opinion

amazing post my steemit friend wish you good luk thank you

Welcome, have a seat. We were talking about you.

@rajuahamad. I warned you previously about spam posting. Despite the warning, You keep posting exactly the same comment across multiple blogs. That’s like slapping my face.
