Hunter's comment

There is no such thing as a self respecting geek who doesn't like Star Trek (which IMHO is Better Than Star Wars) Since 3D printing became a thing many people have been dreaming of a device that is like the Replicator. When I saw this published from Nature Research journal, I went WOW!!!

Normal 3D Prinitng

  • This works a lot like 2D printing but with many materials and layer by layer an object is printed
  • It takes a lot of time
  • Involves lots of moving parts

The Reverse CT Scan Tech

  • Takes very little time
  • Entire object is printed at the same time
  • Can be 3D printed on top of existing objects

The Future Is Already Sort Of Here

This is some genuinely great research. It seems they can only 3D print things at a smaller scale of just a few centimeters. But many great things have humble beginnings. As for now they just have printing done in just one resin material. We actually have a long way to go to make actual replicators though.

I'm very impressed with the speed of the whole thing. It is to be expected as instead of each layer being individually printed, the whole being project onto the resin at once and the liquid solidifies based on the light that is projected onto itself. Great Hunt!
