HOMILETICS 7 (KINDS OF SERMONS).
- TEXTUAL SERMON.
The word text came from a Latin word ‘Textus’ which means something having been woven.
Therefore in textual sermon, the text is the basis of the sermon of the message. In this type of sermon the very words and Phrases of the text are carefully and critically considered. It attempts to unfold the text clause by clause or even word by word.
In textual sermon, the text does not only give the theme, but the divisions of the sermon depend largely on the very words of the text. For example, Psalm 145:15-16 “thou openest thine hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing.”
_Let us split this statement into message structure.-
A. TOPIC “GOD’S PROVIDENTIAL CARE.
It is God’s own personal care- thou.
He does it easily- “openest thy hand”.
He abundantly provides,- “satisfieth the desire of every living. Let us take another example.
THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER- TEXT, MATT 13:1-9
TOPIC: THE CAUSES OF FAILURE IN CHRISTIAN RACE.
Lack of spiritual perception,- the wayside hearers.
Lack of being rooted in the word of God,- stony ground.
- Dissipating influences, -thorns.
TEXTUAL PREACHING DEPENDS ON THREE THINGS.
The nature of the text- not all text can be so developed.
The preacher’s analytical skill, not all pastors or preachers can analylize bible passage or verse as to bring out message like this because it takes discipline to do this.
For this to be possible the preacher must have spiritual perception.
Any pastor who knows how to use textual sermon will never lack message at all. For the people and will always come out with freshness and new messages.
II. TOPICAL SERMON.
This type of sermon is one that is built upon a theme or topic rather than the text.
Examples: Justification by faith.
Text: Rom 5:1.
Outline.
The meaning of justification.
Its nature.
Its ground.
Its result.
Under this sermon the preacher goes to other passage of the scripture to get supporting verses to buttress his point. In topical preaching, we use an outline of one subject only, not sermons that are a conglomerate of subjects. Topical preaching enables the hearer to know exactly what the preacher have preached about. Because it contains one main subject, and will be remembered easily.
III. EXPOSITORY SERMON.
This is a sermon on which several verses, perhaps an entire paragraph or a unified section of a chapter are considered verse by verse in their scriptural order. The preacher reads a portion of scripture and expounds on each verse.
Usually many subjects are involved in this type of preaching. In this kind of preaching it is advisable to have a separate reader other than the preacher. This will stimulate both the congregation and the preacher
IV. BIOGRAPHICAL SERMON.
This type of sermon relates primarily to teachings from the lives and examples of bible characters. It gives detailed study of such characters in order to learn as much as possible from their lives.
An interesting feature of the bible is the manner in which the men and women whose names appeared in the Old and New Testaments of the bible are presented; for the bible did not only record their weakness, but also their strengths and virtues.
Many of the great heroes of the bible have their human flaws. We are very much aware that they are flesh and blood as we are. They faced temptations common to all men, and their response was little different from that of the average Christian today. In all the narrative of Bible history, there is only one truly perfect man, the man Christ Jesus!
The art of expounding truths learned from studying the lives of these men and women is an important one. It is a style of preaching which will help every in touching the life his members, because:
- IT DEALS WITH REALITIES OF LIFE.
It deals with the realities of human life, with its strengths and weaknesses. We can frequently learn so much from the struggles triumphs and failures of those who have gone before us.
HOW TO PREPARE THIS SERMON
- CHOOSE CHARACTERS FROM THE BIBLE.
You could begin this style of preaching by studying some of the great characters of the Bible such as Abraham, Moses, Joshua, Paul and Peter.
These are men whose deeds illuminate the history of God’s dealings with mankind. There is so much to learn from their lives. There are many great women in the Bible, too, whose lives have a special message to convey.
- STUDY THEIR LIVES.
Begin by reading the narrative which tells of the birth of the person. Find out the meaning of his or her name, for most Bible names have tremendous significance. Study the circumstances of his or her upbringing. Pay special attention to the purpose of God in his or her life.
a. What did God want to accomplish through him (or her)?
b. How did he make his purpose known?
c. What was the reaction of the person?
d. What can we learn from the dealing of God in his (or her) life?
e. Are there some dangers we should be aware of?
f. What was the secret of his (or her) success?
