The Holy Spirit was Given to the Believer as an Earnest Deposit (Down Payment)

Context Verses

Eph 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Eph 1:14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Those who trusted in Jesus Christ. These have heard the Word of Truth and responded in faith. Only these were “Sealed with the Holy Spirit.

Analogy

When you go to purchase a car, to keep anyone else from stepping in and taking that car from you, you give “Earnest Money” or a deposit to have the car held for you until you return with the full amount of the purchase price. There are actually proofs that we are truly God’s children. One is that we have the Spirit of promise. The deposit made to keep us until we have the benefit of the full purchase price.

My Thoughts

God gives us this “Spirit of Adoption”. God calls the true believer “Sons and Daughters”. We have this Spirit in a tangible and real (Experiential) way that we know we are His Adopted child. We have the deposit or earnest of the Holy Spirit to make us know we are His. This is not a roll of the dice, if we are His, we know we are His! Hallelujah!
