Agricbusiness For Everyone
Few months ago I planted water leaves and I was told that is it usually quite expensive during the dry season. Getting the stem for planting actually cost some money and preparing the soil and of course planting, all of these are very challenging.
Soil preparation was done. This took a lot of time to clear the bush, gathering the debris, removing the top soil and the stubborn roots and moving them to dumping site.
Tilling of the soil was done few days after the clearing and removing of debris. In few days the soil was now ready for cultivation.
Water leave stems was bought for about 12000 Naira ($33.15) at exchange rate of 362 Naira to a dollar. A day after, the planting started which took up to 4 days, this was because we were 2 people. As at the time of planting, there was rain and this aid easy germination of the stems. In about a week, leaves had started shooting around the stem.
Three weeks after planting, its was ready for sale. A buyer was brought by a friend and a price was reached and I sold for the first time about 2500 Naira ($6.9). The second time, the price was still same and I sold it afterward for 3 times at different prices. At a higher price than before.
Subsequently, during November to December there was scarcity of water leaves due to lack of rain fall. At this time, I sold it for 5000 Naira ($13.8) for more than 3 times. Early this January alone I have sold it 2 times and at a good price also due to lack of rain fall.
I have also expanded this "little" business to fish farming. I have 2 bath tops that will contain 250 finger lings before moving them to a more spacious pond. The essence is to use the water from the fish pond to water the water leaves. in this manner instead of pouring the water away, it will be utilized for growing of water leaves.
