Basic Knowledge in Agriculture 89: crop covering

I am back now after few days of being away and as always I enjoy writing for th e topics about agriculture. This time I noticed the words cover cropping which initially for many sound strange and not really clear but let’s have a look and see what is the meaning of it.
The farmers use the fields for growing different agricultural plants but using the same field for the same plants will exhaust the field, because some of the necessary nutrients will be used and for the next session there is not enough healthy products for plants and farmer may have less harvest but also that they will be smaller and less tasty.
Crop covering is something that is used in order to enrich the soil and to make sure that the soil remains productive. The whole idea is one year the harvest is collected and for the next year instead of leaving the soil just for itself and maybe then it will be overgrown by weed. That is why it is advised to plant different plants or it is called non-harvested crops like peas, rye, legumes. Those plants will be growing and producing the roots, they will be interacted with soil and help to produce certain minerals, to promote soil microbes and help to improve fertility of soil for the next year. Crop covering also will help to stabilise the structure of soil, stabilise it and protect or prevent erosion of soil.
Often depending on the size of the field one may need a specialist to do the assessment of the soil of the whole field, because smaller garden is easy to maintain but the larger area where farmers plant for selling to shops, they need to make sure that the soil is healthy and a specialist could recommend what will be beneficial for certain type of field and after certain plants and harvesting.
