Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #63
Hello, friends welcome to my post in which I have discussed "Basic Knowledge in Agriculture 63" as part of my participation in this contest
What is Soil Leaching
The process by which water moves through the soil, dissolves and carries away soluble minerals, nutrients, and sometimes pollutants from the upper soil layers to deeper soil layers or into the groundwater, is known as soil leaching.
Soil leaching happens when rainfall or irrigation exceeds the soil's capacity to return nutrients and water. While leaching is a natural process, excessive leaching can reduce soil fertility and impact crop production.
Discuss the factors influencing Soil leaching
The factors that affect soil leaching that I know too well are as follows:
Amount of rainfall or irrigation: When there's heavy rainfall or too much irrigation, it can increase downward water movement, which enhances the loss of nutrients from the soil.
Soil Structure and Texture: Soils rich in organic matter can hold enough nutrients and water for long reducing the rate of leaching.
Land management practices: poor application of fertiliser, deforestation, and over irrigation can significantly increase soil leaching.
What is the impact of soil leaching
The impact of soil leaching is categorised into two; positive, and negative impact
Positive impact:
It helps to remove excess salts from the root zone, improving soil conditions in saline soils.
It helps to aid in natural soil formation and nutrient redistribution.
Negative impact:
Loss of essential nutrients like potassium, nitrogen, magnesium, and calcium leading to reduced soil fertility.
Reduced the growth of the crop and yield due to a deficiency of nutrients.
Increased cost for farmers due to the need for traditional fertiliser.
🎉 Congratulations!
