Steem-agro Contest: "Basic Knowledge In Agriculture"
Hi friends and fellow Steemians, it is another interesting week of piled contest and I welcome you to this very blog.
In Your Own Words, What Is Photosynthesis, And What Importance Is It In Agriculture? |
|---|
Photosynthesis is referred to as the process through which plants, algae, and most bacteria transform light energy from the sun into chemical energy in the form of compounds like glucose.
The equation below illustrates this:
6CO2 + 6H2O + Light Energy → C6H12O6 (Glucose) + 6O2
Importance Of Photosynthesis In Agriculture
Climate Regulation: Photosynthesis aids the regulation of Earth's climate by removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and discharging Oxygen (O2).
Yield Potential: Crop yields are directly impacted by photosynthesis, as it affects the production of biomass as well as grain.
Soil Fertility: Photosynthesis promotes soil fertility through the stimulation of microbial activity and cycling of nutrients.
Crop Growth: Photosynthesis generates sugars, starches, as well as other carbohydrates necessary for the growth and development of plants.
Food Security: Photosynthesis is the basis of the food chain, making provision for energy and organic compounds for human and animal consumption.
Photosynthesis is indispensable for agriculture, and comprehending its mechanisms as well as factors influencing it can aid improve crop growth, yield, and food security.
What Are The Key Essential Nutrients Required By Plants, And What Role Does Each Of Them Play In Plant Growth? |
|---|
Plants need indispensable nutrients to grow, develop, and reproduce. These nutrients can be categorized into two classes: 'Macronutrients' and 'Micronutrients'.
While the macronutrients are subdivided into Primary and Secondary nutrients, the micronutrients are referred to as Trace elements.
Macronutrients (Primary Nutrients)
Nitrogen (N)
• Role: Growth of, protein synthesis, production of chlorophyll
• Deficiency: Stunted growth, yellowing leavesPotassium (K)
• Role: Water balance, transport of nutrients, disease resistance
• Deficiency: Feeble stems, yellowing edgesPhosphorus (P)
• Role: Development of root, formation of flower and fruit, energy transfer
• Deficiency: Purpling leaves, stunted growth
Macronutrients (Secondary Nutrients)
Calcium (Ca)
• Role: Development of cell wall, root growth
• Deficiency: Curled leaves, feeble stemsMagnesium (Mg)
• Role: Structure of cell wall, photosynthesis
• Deficiency: Stunted growth, yellowing leavesSulfur (S)
• Role: Disease resistance, protein synthesis
• Deficiency: Yellowing leaves, stunted growth
Micronutrients (Trace Elements)
Boron (B)
• Role: Development cell wall, hormone regulation
• Deficiency: Leaf distortion, terminal bud deathIron (Fe)
• Role: Production of chlorophyll, oxygen transport
• Deficiency: Chlorosis, yellowing leavesMolybdenum (Mo)
• Role: Enzyme activation, nitrogen fixation
• Deficiency: Stunted growth, chlorosisCopper (Cu)
• Role: Disease resistance, photosynthesis
• Deficiency: Chlorosis, stunted growthManganese (Mn)
• Role: Enzyme activation, photosynthesis
• Deficiency: stunted growth, chlorosisZinc (Zn)
• Role: Regulation of Hormone, enzyme activation
• Deficiency: Stunted growth, leaf distortion
Other Essential Nutrients
Oxygen (O)
• Role: Energy production, respirationCarbon (C)
• Role: Biomass production, photosynthesisHydrogen (H)
• Role: Uptake of water, nutrient transport
Briefly Explain This Terminologies; "Mixed Farming" And "Crop Rotation." |
|---|
Mixed Farming
Mixed farming is an agricultural practice that includes multiple crop growing and rearing manifold types of livestock on the same farm. This approach coalesces various farming activities to generate a heterogeneous and resilient farm ecosystem.
Mixed farming is characterized by crop diversification, livestock diversification, integration of crops and livestock, and minimal use of external inputs
It is beneficial for increased biodiversity, increased resilience to climate change, mitigated pest and disease pressure, decreased environmental impact, enhanced soil fertility, ameliorated food security, enhanced livestock health, improved ecosystem services, increased crop yields, and variegate income streams.
Agro-pastoral farming, Aquaponics,
Organic farming, Agro-silvopastoral farming, and Integrated farming systems (IFS) are types of mixed farming.
Crop Rotation
Crop rotation refers to the practice of growing a chain of diverse crops on the same land for the maintenance of soil fertility, reducing pests and diseases, as well as enhancing crop yields.
Crop rotation is beneficial for increased farm resilience, reduction of pests and diseases, enhanced water quality, ameliorated soil fertility, mitigation of soil erosion, improved biodiversity, and improved crop yields.
Alternate rotation, Intercropping, Simple rotation, and Complex rotation are the types of crop rotation.
Explain Three (3) Roles Of Agriculture In Your Country. |
|---|
The following are three roles of agriculture in Nigeria:
Food Security: Agriculture makes food attainable for Nigeria's increasing population, guaranteeing the availability of staple crops such as maize, yams, rice, and cassava.
Foreign Exchange Earnings: Agriculture creates foreign exchange through the exportation of cash crops such as cashews, sesame seeds, cocoa, and rubber.
Economic Growth: Agriculture significantly contributes to Nigeria's GDP, making provision for employment and income for millions of farmers, processors, as well as traders.
Further roles of agriculture in Nigeria include:
- Rural Development
- Employment Creation
- National Development
- Poverty Alleviation
- Environmental Conservation
- Supply of Raw Materials
