Mycology is a science branch of biology concerned with fungi like mushrooms, mould and yeasts. It talks about their structure, genetics, classification and ecological functions. Mycology allows the study of the fungi and therefore allows the scientists to know how the fungi grow, reproduce and the manner in which they relate to the plants, animals and the environment. Fungi are also important as they are decomposers as such they feed on the organic matter and consequently release the nutrients back to the eco system.

They may also find use in medicine (e.g. to get antibiotics, such as penicillin) and industry (e.g. food fermentation, biotechnology). The other area that mycology examines is the destructive fungi that infect plants, animals, and human beings. Generally, mycology provides the required data to agriculture, medicine, environmental application and other scientific applications.

Discuss on why mycology is Important.

The importance of mycology is that, fungi find application in the ecosystem, industry, medicine and agriculture. They are decomposers and they have the role of decomposing organic matter and recycling nutrients that are essential in the fertility of soils, as well as growth of plants. Several varieties of fungi develop symbiosis with plants and aid in the absorption of water and minerals. Antibiotics, e.g. penicillin, are also being produced out of fungi in the medical field and there are medicines to treat diseases and help in organ transplants.

Food production also implicates mycology in the production of yeast that are used in baking, brewing and fermentation. Agriculture can also make use of the knowledge about fungi to avoid plant infection and increase crop production.Fungi are also applied in biotechnology as enzyme source, biofuels and biodegradable materials. All in all, mycology helps in maintaining the environment, human beings and the economy in its good state.

What are the Real-life Applications of Mycology.

There are numerous practical uses of mycology in science, health and in day to day life. Fungi have been used to make antibiotics such as penicillin, antifungal drugs and immune-boosting compounds, in medicine. Mycology is useful in agriculture to enable farmers to manage plant diseases, enhance soil fertility and create biofertilizers that enable healthy crops. Fungi are also utilized in food industries to prepare bread, cheese, beer among other fermented products.

Environmental scientists adopt fungi as a method of bioremediation, where fungi are responsible in degrading pollutants, waste, and oil spills to purify the environment. Mycology has also been used to support biotechnology through provision of enzymes in industries. All in all, fungal research is significant towards bettering health, food production, and environmental sustainability.
