Regenerative agriculture stands out among other methods of farming due to its potential to regenerate nature, and at the same time produce sufficient food supply to feed an increasing number of people. I believe that this approach should be viewed as a farming practice that exceeds the idea of sustainability. While sustainability implies the maintenance of the existing conditions on the farmland, regenerative agriculture is aimed at improving the land with each farming season. Thus, the main goal is the restoration of soil fertility, development of biodiversity, conservation of water resources, and improvement of ecosystems with the purpose of providing productive farmland to future generations in the context of climate change and food insecurity.
The main feature of regenerative agriculture is the principle of cooperation with nature rather than the attempts to dominate over it. Unlike conventional farming practices that rely on synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, tillage of the land to increase production, the regenerative approach encourages the use of natural processes that improve the condition of the land. The farmers try to cultivate the soils filled with organic materials, microorganisms, and all kinds of nutrients. As a result, the crops and the livestock become healthier as well.
There are many regenerative agriculture practices that should be observed in any farm operation. One of them is the use of cover crops, mulch or residues of crops to keep the soil covered to reduce erosion and moisture loss. The other principle is minimizing soil disturbance through reduction of excessive ploughing to protect beneficial life underground. The farmers practice crop rotation and inter-cropping with various crops to increase biodiversity and reduce pests while ensuring nutrients in the soil. Integrating of livestock in the farm is another practice of regenerative agriculture since the grazing helps to fertilize the soil.
There are many practical farming techniques used in regenerative agriculture. They include the use of cover crops that will protect the farmland from being exposed when the main crops are not in the field. There are also use of composting and organic fertilizers in farming to help fertilize the soil while protecting beneficial microbes. Agroforestry involves the growing of crops or animals together with trees which reduces erosion, provides shade, increases biodiversity and stores carbon. The farmers can use the rotational grazing where animals are allowed to feed on the grass before they are moved to another place.
The major advantage of regenerative agriculture lies in the improvement of the quality of soil. Good quality soil has high amounts of organic matter, is rich in nutrients, retains water longer, and can support millions of different microorganisms that aid in plants growing. The more fertile the soil is, the less farmers need chemicals in order to fertilize their land and use pesticides against pests and diseases. The better the soil condition is, the less likely it is to be eroded and the longer farmers can use it productively without having to abandon their farmland due to its infertility.
Another benefit of regenerative agriculture includes environmental protection. Good quality soil acts as a source of storing the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and thus contributes to decreasing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change. Increased biodiversity leads to the development of insects, birds, pollinators, earthworms, and good microorganisms that help to keep the balance within an ecosystem. Improved soil condition also contributes to the absorption of rainwater and the decrease of floods and increase of the supply of groundwater.
From an economic standpoint, there are many long-term benefits associated with regenerative agriculture. While farmers will have to invest some of their time and money when switching to the new practices, healthy soils will eliminate the need to use expensive chemicals in agriculture. Additionally, more resilient farms will be able to endure periods of drought, floods, and changes in weather patterns without experiencing losses. Consumers will also benefit as regenerative agriculture usually leads to the production of healthy products that preserve natural resources needed for the production of future food products.
There are, however, also several disadvantages associated with regenerative agriculture. While switching to the new system of farming, farmers may experience temporary declines in yields. It is also necessary to note that farmers will have to learn new techniques that require education and patience, as well as constant observation of the processes occurring in nature. Regenerative agriculture also requires some investments in the initial stage (for instance, fencing, planting cover crops, producing compost, and improving grazing). Lack of knowledge, insufficient technical assistance, and policies supporting conventional farming prevent many farmers from switching to the new system.
In my view, regenerative agriculture is the future of sustainable agriculture. This practice takes into consideration that ecosystems play an important role in ensuring food security and the welfare of humans. Rather than viewing nature as something to be utilized, this practice helps farmers become custodians of the land. Through regeneration of soil health, conservation of water, increase in diversity, sequestration of carbon, and development of resilient agricultural practices, regenerative agriculture tackles a number of issues faced in the current day by the environment and agriculture. Through embracing this practice more by farmers, governments, researchers, and consumers, we will create a food system that not only feeds the current population but also preserves the earth for generations to come.
