Agricultural Diaries
I wake up early, sky still kind of dark, rooster already shouting like he own the place. My legs still heavy but farm don’t wait, so I pick my old hoe and step outside. Cool air touch my face, it feel nice before the sun come and burn skin.
First thing, I walk to the small garden behind house. The soil look dry, so I carry water with bucket, splash it around. Some of the maize already taller than me, but some plant look weak, maybe too much insects biting leaves. I bend down, pull weeds out, my hands dirty but it don’t matter, dirt is normal here.
Sometimes goat already crying for food, so I leave crops and run back. I cut some grass, throw inside the pen. They fight each other for it, funny animals, always hungry. I check the chickens too, throw maize for them to peck, and one hen give me fresh egg today. I put it in my pocket, careful so it don’t break, but still warm when I touch it.
By the time sun climb high, sweat already dripping, my shirt wet. I make holes and plant beans on the other side of the field, make holes with stick, drop seeds, cover gently. Birds keep coming close, like they want to steal, so I wave my arms to chase them. It feels like fight every season, me against nature, but still I love it.
Afternoon work sometimes heavy. We fix fence that broken last night, maybe cow push too hard. My brother help me tie wood with rope, not perfect but it will hold. Mama come later with small food, cassava and groundnut, we sit under tree, eat, laugh small, then back to work.
During harvest time it’s more busy, more noise, children running with baskets, people talking loud. We fill sacks with maize, pile them, carry to store. Tired body but full heart because you see what months of sweat bring. Nothing taste better than eating food you pull out of soil yourself.
Evening I slow down, no rush. I wash face, feed animals one more time, check goats are safe. Sometimes I sit outside and just look at sky, it turn red and soft. My hands sore, back ache little, but I feel peace. Farming not easy, never easy, but it give life, it feed family, it keep us close.
Every day new challenge, maybe too much rain or no rain at all, maybe pest, maybe sickness in cow. But diary of farmer, it not written on paper only, it’s in every crop standing, every meal on table, every laugh after work done.
