Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #28
Hello steemians today am back and am here to participate on this basic knowledge in agriculture contest hosted in this great steem agro community.
What is hydroponics
The term hydroponics comes from the Greek word hydro which means water and ponos which means work.
This is a method of growing plants without the use of soil and this deals with a water based nutrient solution, this method allows plants to absorb essential minerals and nutrients from the water directly and often with support from the inert media. The system of hydroponics can be either open or closed with options like floating gardens or just vertical setups.
State the benefits of Hydroponics
The benefits of Hydroponics are
Higher Crop Yields
Water Efficiency
No Soil-Borne Diseases
Space-Saving Design
Year-Round Farming
Eco-Friendly Practices
Higher Crop Yields
Hydroponics kind of system optimizer light , nutrients and water enabling faster growth and plentiful harvest compared to the usual soil farming
Water Efficiency
These uses 80% less of water than the traditional farming by reusing the water and minimising evaporation and it is good and ideal for areas that are prone to drought.
No Soil-Borne Diseases
Reduce the risk of pests wedds and soil problems. And this makes the plant even more healthier for them to produce more crops/ plants.
Space-Saving Design
The vertical hydroponics kind of setups are good cause they take minimal space making them perfect to to setup in urban areas and small homes to those who do not have a land . And this allows the plants to grow closer and properly without competing for soil nutrients and space.
Applications of Hydroponics
Home Gardening
Home gardeners can grow herbs tomatoes lettuce and garden kind of crops using small-scale system like the float gardens or the countertop setups.
Commercial Agriculture
Large kind of farms produce high value crops example is cucumber, pepper, in greenhouse for supermarket and restaurants.
Challenging Environments
Arid type of regions like the deserts and islands rely on the hydroponics method just to produce fresh food without the use of soil .
Hydroponics has changed agriculture by combining efficiency, sustainability, and adaptability. From home kitchens to urban vertical farms, it brings food security and environmental challenges while delivering high-quality produce.
