The Depth of Ignorance.

In and around my community, everyone seems to have become a health expert.

"I don’t take sugar. Sugar is not healthy."
Saying this at the dinner table while washing down a mountain of fufu and egusi with 2 cold bottles of beer.

If the bragging is allowed to continue, they’ll add:
"I don’t take orthodox medicine. Those are chemicals. Natural herbs are better."
That is when they will show you 3 different concoctions with no label, no dosage. "It’s all natural, from roots and herbs. I have not been to a hospital for the past 3 years."

It really hit me when I realised:
Drinking 2 bottles of Fanta at a gathering means "you’re hungry."
But gulping 4 bottles of beer means "you’re a strong man."

Have you heard these "health feeders" talk about preservatives in canned food?
They’ll say it while striking a pose, munching on "a fresh red apple."
It creates the impression that they are smart — a bragging right mostly reserved for those who have "schooled."

That same person probably took tea — a chocolate drink with a generous amount of Peak milk.
"Yes, there were no cubes, only 2 dessert spoons of honey."

The irony is so pronounced.
2 cold bottles of beer. A mountain of solid fufu in egusi soup.
Just wait, and act surprised when the doctor says "You have Type 2 diabetes."

Half knowledge is worse than total ignorance.
We avoid the cubes just because this one is called "sugar" and the others are not.

Simply because it is "natural" doesn’t make it safe or less of a chemical.
Some naturally occurring toxins are more potent than their laboratory-synthesized cousins.

Less I forget, that apple he is posing with is not fresh.
It may have been waxed, boxed, and stored one year ago from a farm in France or South Africa.

The depth of ignorance is loud, and it wears the cloth of discipline.
