My memorable neighbor experience

It was right in the middle of the last rainy season, we all experienced an endless downpour. The flood warning signs had gone up, and I was at home when the small gutter just outside my compound completely clogged with refuse. Before I could even process it, muddy water started seeping in through my front door, fast reaching the center of my compound!

I was freaking out, imagining having to shovel a colossal mound of soggy rubbish and water with just a small shovel, singlehandedly!

Before I knew what was happening, Mr. Okafor from across the street, came out with his rain boots on, a long iron rod in his hands, and he just walked straight into the downpour into my compound without being invited. We both dug and dragged rotten food items, plastic bottles, and God knows what else from the blocked gutter for almost an hour, until the water began to recede.

Was the outcome of this experience positive or negative?

The outcome of the incident was to my pleasant surprise. It was the transformation of an exceptionally stressful and irritating situation into a beautiful and memorable one that further solidified my relationship with Mr. Okafor and some other neighbours, fostering a great sense of community in the compound.

What was the best part about the entire experience?

For me, by far, the biggest thing this incident taught me is the importance of being able to truly recognize and value those who live next to you. Most of the times, we cohabit with other people so closely, without truly experiencing the joy of their company, until in a period of distress that walls built through ignorance crumble and deep friendships take root instantaneously. I definitely found myself a lot more aware of who lived around me and promised myself to always try to be available for others.

What are the qualities of a good neighbour?

A good neighbor to me must possess some, if not all of the following traits:

Respect for privacy- they need to be cordial and friendly but know not to overstep their bounds or be intrusive.
Dependable- knowing you can count on them for help, be it looking after your property when you're away or coming to the rescue during an emergency.
A team player- they should be cooperative in helping maintain peace in the environment, perhaps mediating disputes on noise or improper waste disposal in the neighbourhood.

Do you believe neighbours are important? Explain.

Yes, neighbours definitely are important! Although we often have family and close friends who are the pillars of our support systems, when a midnight emergency arises, these dear ones can often be miles away! Neighbours form that crucial first defense network that helps keep our safety net in place. Perhaps even more importantly, having good relationships with neighbours makes for a much more peaceful and conducive environment in which to live.

Thanks for reading my post I'm inviting @josepha, @bela90 and @chant to participate.
