"Madam! Madam open the door! Fire! The house is on fire!" the houseboy screamed from the hallway.

Ngozi froze. Smoke was already creeping in from under the bedroom door.

If she opened the door, Sunday, the houseboy, would see the golden casket. If she didn't, she would burn alive with her daughter's corpse!

"Madam!!!" Sunday banged louder. GBOSA! GBOSA!

Ngozi’s greedy heart raced. She grabbed a thick blanket and threw it over the golden casket, hiding the shiny metal.

Then, coughing from the thick black smoke, she unlocked the door.

Sunday rushed in, grabbing her arm. "The kitchen gas exploded! Let’s go out!"

"My... my bags!" Ngozi pretended to panic, but she allowed Sunday to drag her out of the burning house.

Outside, neighbors had gathered with buckets of water and sand. They threw water through the kitchen windows, fighting the flames before they could reach the main house.

"Where is Ada?" Papa Nkechi, a neighbor, shouted over the chaos. "Madam Ngozi, where is your daughter?"

Ngozi forced out fake tears, throwing herself on the dirt. "She is at her uncle's house! Thank God she is not here! Oh, my house! My property!"

It took thirty minutes for the fire to be put out. The kitchen was destroyed, but the fire had miraculously stopped just inches away from Ngozi's master bedroom.

"You are lucky, Madam," one of the men said, wiping soot from his face. "The fire didn't enter your room."

Ngozi didn't wait to thank them. She rushed back inside, locking the front door behind her. She ran straight to her bedroom.

The room smelled of smoke, but the golden casket was untouched.

She pulled off the blanket. Suddenly...

Splash. Splash.

Ngozi stepped back. Water was leaking from the bottom of the locked casket. Salty, dark ocean water was pooling on her expensive rug.

And then... a faint, wet voice spoke from inside the box.

"Mummy... it is cold... I am drowning..."

Ada was still alive!

Ngozi grabbed the heavy padlock. Her hands trembled. Her motherly instinct fought a terrible war against her greed.

If she opens the box, her daughter lives, but her billions will vanish.

Ngozi looked at her ruined house. She remembered the shame. The poverty.

She dropped the padlock and sat heavily on top of the golden lid.

"Drown, Ada!" Ngozi whispered, tears mixing with her wicked sweat. "Drown and bring me my dollars!"
