"Digital World" is a broad term. What do you mean? Internet? Data-bases? CRM systems? Mobile Devices? Apps? Crypto-Currencies? My experience in all of these areas (either directly or indirectly) is that you have to provide value to people to make money. If you do not provide value, they will spend their time and money elsewhere. And, in so many ways, the digital world is a battle to win people's TIME - to get them to invest it with your creation. And, people have a lot of other opportunities that compete for their time. So, whether you are serious or not isn't as important as whether or not you are creating value. Now, if you're suggesting there are some undisciplined players who prosper, this has proven to be true in all segments of the economy. A lot of poorly trained, undisciplined people have made money flipping houses or trading stocks or even playing pro sports. Here's to making money whether you are serious or not!
IMO you need a certain level of dedication to make what ever you are doing profitable. Whether it be an online store or blog, you need to put in some effort to be able to make quality content or services that would make people want to use them. In essence you need to put in enough effort to make whatever you make or provide worthwhile, for others to give your them money.

I think it depends on the domain.
