Don’t Forget the Google+ Story

in #steem5 years ago

‪For those convinced #Libra or #Voice will be successful simply because Facebook and Block One have lots of money, remember the G+ story.‬

‪Creating a social platform people add to their daily lives is like birthing a magical living organism. No one knows exactly how it’s done.‬

Steem is a living organism, from a certain perspective. It survives via the energy put into it by the witnesses and users, with growth every three seconds. It feeds on our time and attention. It expands and gives birth to new applications, interfaces, and use cases.

More on that idea here in this tweet thread:

Have you noticed the energy around here lately? It’s electric and intense. People care. Yes, many have come and gone, but the organism still feeds and grows. There is no telling what will happen next. I’m excited.

I had some great times on Google+ for about a year or so.
Even with 500k followers I stepped away and I still wonder to this day why me and so many others stopped.... it's a good opportunity to think about what they failed to provide for their users even though so much of the experience seemed better.

it's basically IRC again on steem. channels with 100+ headstrong people who think the internet belongs to them. it's all good thou, fragmentation to find your tribe is fine if you can switch channels for your wants and needs and if it brings attention to steem again, all the better -- i'd rather have momentum than stagnation any day ;)

I actually liked using Google+ but yeah once you start to dilute your product and move into things you're not going to support with development and marketing it starts to stagnate and even fester. I don't think many people will even remember google+ even though it had millions of users, same with stumbleupon.

Pity we didn't do more to welcome those communities once the sites went down but hopefully, they'll find their way here eventually

I like what you said about the energy around here lately. I have noticed. I'm excited too.

I hope you are right!

What we have here on Steem can’t be bought. There was a lot of luck involved with the timing, having no ICO and the people Steem attracted. I look forward to seeing what Voice does, but if Voice thinks it is even guaranteed the success Steem has had and currently enjoyed, it has a long uphill battle coming.

I wish them good luck but the database/backend and blockproducers are generally owned by (pro censorship parties) already. I'd love for these users to adopt Steem as well, but we have to have a really strong and resilient decentralized governance (repository) first.

Show me one example of actual censorship.

It’s not possible.

Edit: sorry, I think I misunderstood your post. I’m confused on which group you were saying is pro censorship.

Yup, I don't think either of these will catch on. Most young people don't even use facebook anymore.

I keep playing Steem Monsters and my Steem Power keeps growing.. I have been loving this pattern.. I was down to 200 SP, but by battling and earning DEC on Splinterlands I can send that to steem-engine and back to my wallet to power it up! I am currently at about 575, but my short term goal is 1000SP! After that who knows.. I guess I will follow the pattern!

Facebook is sorely lacking in that "life principle" these days... I expect Libra will be extremely "meh."

Nice post. Loved the life fact.

I didn't like g+ but I was gonna spend it all on google glasses (not related I know) but hey.

Steemit is amazing, it has given food to a lot of people I know in Venezuela and the apps built on steem are cool too, sadly steemit is extremely centralized but it requieres a very specific knowledge to know that.
