How to “hack” your way to bigger Vimm upvotes

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

Hey guys, as many of you know I recently took a step back from the Vimm team. As I’m finding my way in my new role as a curator I thought it was the perfect moment to tell you how to “hack” your way to more and bigger upvotes on Vimm. You already know - a lot of it depends on whether or not a curator “notices” you in a positive way. But what is exactly is a positive way?

What do curators look at

It all comes down to being proactive, both in your stream as the way your promote yourself. We prefer to see a channel that maybe streams an hour every 2 days and promotes themselves and engages with the community, than one that just streams 24/7 standing idle. Don’t get this wrong, we will notice the latter. We will just be less proun to click that upvote button if you never engage with your audience or promote your channel.

Examples of good promotion are: sharing your channel with your friends and family; sharing your channel outside of the Vimm discord; visiting and engaging with other streamers; sharing your stream on social media channels (not only steemit).

Good engagement is reading and talking back to chat, not insulting people - just make good content that people enjoy to watch and you should be good. I realize that this (especially for new streamers) can be quite difficult. It requires you to keep talking and positive even if there might not be someone around. This is something that many streamers struggle with, and I encourage you to do some old fashioned google research to find some tips to deal with this. Depending on the type of person you are, you might find this very difficult or not, but with practice it will get easier.

It is a misconception that more visitors on Vimm will get you more viewers

The biggest danger of just streaming idle is that no one ever passes or sticks around in your channel. When streamers promote their stream, their viewers will most likely engage with the streamer until (s)he goes offline. The moment that stream ends the majority will leave the platform, that’s some hard cold statistics for you. The ones who do stay around and browse other channels will more often than not be sceptical of the channels they pass. Rightfully so, they don’t know you and you have everything to prove. Imagine you watching a streamer who doesn’t respond to you and has a chat with no one else than you in it…

Does that mean that you not promoting your channel will never get you any viewers? Well it does and it doesn’t…When you’re streaming, make quality content, engage with your audience but never promote your channel. You might get a few viewers that stick around, but you will grow very slow. Look at it like this: the promotion of your channel is what get you new viewers. The quality of your content is what determines whether they stick around or not.

Where does the point system come into place?

The point system, aka leaderboard, is a representation of your activity of the last 3 months. The more points you accumulated, the higher the upvote you receive can be.

curator upvote weight no options selected for stream with lowpoints => curator upvote weight all options selected for stream with low points

Here is representation of a channel with a fair amount of activity total allowed weight. As you can see, there is already a huge difference of almost half the total allowed upvote weight depending on the quality of the stream and how it’s promoted.

curator upvote weight no options selected for stream with high points => curator upvote weight all options selected for stream with high points

And here you can see what the curators can upvote to someone who has accumulated some more points than the previous example. Note that the difference in upvote weight increased with 11 percent.

The points you get while streaming are determined by many different parameters. And here comes the big secret, are you listening? Ready? The amount of time you stream is NOT the biggest parameter. The most important parameter that gives way, way, way more weight to your point total is actually…. Chat activity!

That’s right, the more people are engaging with you in your chat, the more difference you’ll see in your point total as well as the vimm upvote. If you ever wondered why some streamers who stream way less than 24/7 streams still are ranked higher, here it is. The idea behind this is that the more engaging you are with your viewers, the more they will write to you. See how everything is coming together, the more you promote your channel the more different viewers you’ll get. The more you create quality content, the more they will use your chat.

There are 3 rules of how chat activity points are measured:

  • Rule #1: the streamer’s chat activity won’t be taken into account for neither points or the next 2 rules
  • Rule #2: the points you’ll get from a message is lowered depending on how many messages were already from the same user in the last x messages
  • Rule #3: The more different chatters, the more their messages are worth (also taken into account rule #2)

Now I won’t get into details of how many points you can accumulate from each message in detail. There should be some flair of mystery to prevent abuse. But we can put it like this: the more viewers you’ll get, the bigger the Vimm upvote will be.

Don’t forget that at the end of the road it’s still the curators that decide whether or not you’ll get an upvote. No amount of points you’ve accumulated is going to change that. That’s why some channels are receiving upvotes more frequently than others.

Now you should have more than a headstart in comparison to “idle” streamers. I don’t think anyone from Vimm actually went so deep in how to optimize your stream earning, but I figure the people reading this are the ones that want to work towards improving their channel. Keep promoting the f#*k out of your channel and give your viewers a reason to come back. The best of luck to all of you, vimm on <3

From you, or the vimm account? Asking for a friend...

Bwhahaha!
Such amaze.
Secrets known. 😎

Good to know about the vimm logo? How does the twitter checkbox work? If you have a link to twitter in your bio or description?

The twitter checkbox is meant for "is active and sharing their stream" on social media. So if we see that you are actively promoting your stream, on social media. For me personally if I know someone is active on social media it is an auto check as I don't want to tell people how to promote themselves, maybe you want to share your stream everytime, maybe only when you plan a "special" stream. But I can't speak for the other curators. I do advice to use the hashtag #streamonvimm when you promote your stream we often filter on it on social media channels :)
