BetterFPL - A must-have browser extension for the Fantasy Premier League

in #steem6 years ago (edited)

If you know me then you know I'm crazy about football and participating in the Fantasy Premier League. This is my 9th season playing this game and I'm determined to beat my best finish of 29,397th and place 1st in @acidyo's league. To do this I'm using every tool at my disposal, and one of the best I've found so far is a browser extension called BetterFPL. Basically it offers some great quality of life improvements over the default Fantasy Premier League website, and honestly, once you start using it it's hard to go back.

What does it do?

It does a lot! I'll show some of the features I think are the most significant ones below, because there is really too much to cover in a single post.

Improved team overview

It gives a quick overview of the five upcoming fixtures of each player and their difficulty, which is extremely useful when selecting your team. And that little number next to the fixture? A player's expected points! I'm not sure how that is calculated (it's done by the website itself, not the extension), but it's also definitely something that can make stressful decisions a little bit easier. Finally, you can quickly switch between captains and vice-captains by hovering over a player and clicking one of the two little buttons.

Informative points

Ever want a quick overview of how one of your players achieved the amount of points he did (or didn't - why Jagielka, why?!)? Just hover over a player's points and it will bring up a little window showing a breakdown of his points!

Transfer sensibly

If you've played this game before then you know we've all been in a situation where we can't think rationally anymore and our emotions take over (a rage transfer is what I like to call it) or where you are trying to find the perfect player to fit the gaping hole in your team, but inexplicably can't. With BetterFPL this shouldn't trouble you as much as before, because you now have the following features to help you out.

Add a player to your watch list

Want to knee-jerk in a defensive midfielder in after he scored a penalty cough Jorginho cough? Maybe add him to your watch list instead and judge him by more than 1 game.

Filter by each price instead of increments of 0.5

Looking for that perfect £5.3 midfielder that will use up your remaining budget? Simply set as the maximum price instead of having to look at that amazing £5.4 midfielder that is just out of your reach.

See an overview of a player's fixtures without clicking on them

Player had a great game and you don't have time to check his upcoming fixtures because you need him in your team NOW? Luckily it will show below a player's name and maybe the five red squares will stop you from making a big mistake!

Sort players by expected points

Great if you are contemplating taking a hit (-4 points) and need some justification that it's worth it.

Check out your competition

Want to see who has captained who, what chips they have used and what players their team consists of? This used to be a huge pain in the arse, but now you can see all of this in an easy to read and compact overview. It even shows how many points someone has left on the bench so you can have a quick laugh in between planning your next genius transfer.

There are plenty more features, but I wanted to give an overview of the ones I use and find the most useful. Currently the extension is completely free to use, but unfortunately it's not open source and I've read the developer might have plans to include some kind of subscription free, which would be a shame. Unfortunately it is also only available from Chrome, but it should be coming to Firefox soon as well. Anyway - what are you guys waiting for? You'll need this if you want to stand a chance of beating me to 1st!
