Here's a supplementary travelogue: A trip to Zhongxiang

During the Qingming Festival holiday, our family of three arranged a short trip within the province, and our destination was Zhongxiang City. In two days, we visited two major scenic spots: one was Huangxian Cave and the other was Mingxian Mausoleum. One is a wonder of nature, and the other is a cultural heritage.

First, let's talk about Huangxian Cave. It is a natural cave and is about an hour's drive from the center of Zhongxiang City. Since I drive less often in daily life, for safety reasons, I drive rather slowly. I have to pass through many mountain roads and curves along the way, so I am particularly careful. After arriving at the scenic area, cross a short wooden plank road and you will come to a huge cave entrance. For people like us who are used to living in the city, just seeing this cave entrance is already breathtaking.

After entering the cave, I didn't expect that there was a completely different world inside. The space inside is sometimes narrow, sometimes wide, like a hall, and sometimes narrow like a narrow path. It goes up and down one after another, with a very large height difference. This reminds me of Jules Verne's famous science fiction novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth". The stalactites in the cave are of various shapes and sizes. Under the illumination of colorful lights, it seems as if one has entered a parallel universe or an alien world full of fantasy. The stalactites in Huangxian Cave are of various shapes. Under the reflection of the colorful artificial lights, it feels as if one is in an alien world that is even more splendid and fantastical than "Avatar".

The peculiar difference between the stalactites in the cave and ordinary stones lies in that they gradually grow with the participation of water flow. Compared with the sharp-edged ordinary stones, its shape appears more like a living organism with a complex structure and looks very vigorous. In reality, it is indeed a stone formed when water that has dissolved carbonates and carbon dioxide enters the underground environment of a cave, undergoes chemical reactions due to environmental changes, and re-precipitates from the water. It is indeed a gradual growth process, but this growth process far exceeds the scale of human life, measured in tens of thousands of years.

Facing such a strange landscape, one can't help but marvel at the insignificance of human beings and the wonders of nature. So, how does nature create such strangely shaped things as life and stalactites? This inevitably reminds people of the so-called "dissipative structure theory". The dissipative structure theory is a corolary of the second law of thermodynamics, the law of entropy increase, which states that the universe prefers to develop towards an entropy-increasing state. Any system will undergo an evolution from low entropy to high entropy, which is the reason why nothing can last long and also the true meaning of "the world is unpredictable".

So, in that case, how did things with distinct and complex structures like life and stalactites come into being? It is also attributed to the second law of thermodynamics. Because an ordered structure like life is a dissipative structure, while it uses energy to maintain or even replicate its own structure, it will accelerate the rate of entropy increase in its surrounding environment. Therefore, such a structure is allowed to exist as a tool for nature to reach a thermal equilibrium state more quickly. The formation of stalactites is based on the same principle. The water flowing into the cave dissolves the carbon dioxide and carbonates from the outside and enters the cave, which is equivalent to bringing in the energy from the outside. Then, the carbon dioxide is re-released in the cave, and this process increases the entropy of the cave environment.

The ultimate goal of the evolution of nature is that the state of thermal equilibrium is a uniform, undifferentiated and dull state everywhere. However, in the process of guiding towards this goal, the universe will create all kinds of wonders to accelerate this process, such as life, stalactites and various natural wonders to accelerate this process. Just like the universe and life itself, it is full of such paradoxes.

Our lives seem to be a tiny universe as well. Everyone will have a day when they leave this world. And after that moment, it's as if they have reached a uniform thermal equilibrium everywhere, falling into eternal tranquility. This reminds us that perhaps there is no such thing as a beautiful shore or paradise guaranteed by religion. The present moment we are experiencing is the most magical and wonderful.
