If you're young, you may not of even heard of "Jonestown". Back in 1978 there was this charismatic Religious "Nut job" by the name of Jim Jones. His ""Church"" had been the target of investigations by the San Francisco media, so Jones and a large number of his ""Followers"" fled to the Jungle of Guyana. It became known that Jones was engaged in torture of some of his ""Followers"" who'd broken his increasingly strict rules, along with other improprieties.

The population of Jones's jungle settlement (Called Jonestown) had swelled to nearly 1,000 people... Mostly Americans.

A Congressman from California named Leo Ryan flew to Guyana to investigate allegations that Jones was holding young children there against the wishes of their legal guardians back here in the States. No one knows just what evidence Ryan found, but he soon headed for the nearby airstrip with a number of "Defectors" from the cult, preparing to fly back to the United States.

Jones had a number of ""Enforcers"" some of whom followed Ryan to the airstrip with guns, and mowed down the group as they tried to board the planes.

Afterwards Jones freaked out, called his "Flock" together... And in a charismatic "Sermon" convinced most of them to commit suicide by drinking Kool-Aid laced with Cyanide. Those who didn't willingly kill themselves and many children, were either shot by Jone's ""Enforcers"", or injected with the poison in needles. Some who ran were shot in the back.

Over 900 people died there that day. At the time, it was so horrifying that the story consumed the thoughts, and prayers of America for weeks.

It was horrific!

Let's imagine there's another "Religious Cult" Today......

In our imaginary cult, The "Faithful" have created their own god. (I tried to think of a name that wasn't similar to anything else so I apologize if it is. Gorgon is actually Medusa's Sister in Greek Mythology.) We'll call Him / Her "Gorgon." Not unlike many of the other gods that people worship, The Lord of Abraham, Christ, Muhammad. Buddha... "Gorgon" is intangible. This means that you can't see Gorgon. You can't go to any one place to find Gorgon. It's just assumed that He/She's there. Gorgon - To it's followers, however DOES have super human powers!!! Gorgon can do things ordinary people can't. It has the authority and power to take whatever it decides. Property, money, People's freedoms, can be removed by Gorgon simply by the command of Gorgon's high priests. Gorgon's agents (Or "Enforcers") can KILL many many innocent people, and by saying that they are doing it in the name of Gorgon..... This is perfectly acceptable to the faithful in the Gorgonite faith.

The faithful Gorgonite followers regularly have these strange rituals, where they chose the high priests of Gorgon!!! High Priesthood can be bought if you have enough "Gorgo - Coins". Often the rich in the Gorgonite faithful, will give Gorgo - coins to someone in exchange for future favors..... You see the high priests of Gorgon have by extension, all the powers of their god. They kill, steal, extract, extort, so they can live in extreme opulence. They have many indentured servants who serve them all in the name of the great Gorgon. They've convinced the faithful that life cannot exist without Gorgon!!!

They have rituals to decree the commandments of Gorgon. They have decreed that all of the faithful will "Tithe" to the god of Gorgon as much as half of their worldly goods. If the faithful do not comply with these commandments, the Priests send their Enforcers to extract from the faithful under the threat of death, or the faithful might be thrown in a cage for all the congregation to see. If you sin against Gorgon..... You WILL be punished!!!

The Priests of Gorgon, are free to spend the money tithed by the faithful - However they choose to spend it.

Often... In order to increase the flock's numbers the Priests will send Gorgon's "Enforcers" to burn down other Churches!

Once the other churches are burned to ash, those who had contributed bribes to the Priests are free to plunder the other churches for any gold, and trinkets they can find.

The sermons given by the Priests are quite convincing. The faithful will throw themselves in Death's way to honor their god. They NEVER even question the existence of Gorgon!!!

The Priests have fashioned an idol. It has the image of Gorgon printed on the finest Linen. The Faithful have copied this many times over. Their Children are required to bow before this symbol of Gorgon every Day. If someone in the flock refuses to pledge their very heart and soul to the symbol of Gorgon.... They are shunned by the flock, ostracized... Treated as if they are the scourge of the Earth!!!

The Gorgonite faithful are even expected to revere the priests enforcers. These enforcers are allowed to steal, and kill in Gorgon's name (So long as the Priests, and those who bribe them profit from the Enforcers actions.)

The faithful have been convinced by the priests, as they use their charisma to give sermons over and over, admonishing the faithful gorgonites to revere the enforcers..... Even as the faithful fear those very same enforcers who steal from them, and lock them in cages. They through the Priests in the name of the great god Gorgon, can do unspeakable things, with no remorse (After all... They're serving Gorgon) and no consequences.

The indoctrination is complete!!! The faithful never even question the existence of Gorgon. They've NEVER in their lives even imagined what life would be like without Gorgon!!! The Priests have convinced them that there would be Rivers of Blood in the streets. Your dog would rape the neighbor's cat, and many more unspeakable things, if not for the guiding hand and threat of violence from the great god of Gorgon!!!

Now that I think about it.... The faith of the followers of Gorgon, is not unlike people's faith in the State, or "statism". This is absolute faith in Government. We can't imagine how life could be without it!!!
