The Binary Sunset in Star Wars: A Symbol of Change

in #starwars6 years ago (edited)

What could be more exciting for a Star Wars fan than to remember that A New Hope scene in which Luke Skywalker is contemplating the binary sunset on Tatooine?

The iconic scene is accompanied by "The Force Theme," a piece composed by John Williams that is repeated several times throughout the saga, usually in moments of great emotion. When listening to it, our memory always takes us to that scene of Luke contemplating the horizon, so it is a theme that we inevitably associate with this character (it's also known as "Luke's Theme"), with the Force and, of course, the binary sunsets in the universe created by George Lucas.

In the entire Star Wars saga (from Episode I to VIII), we have been shown three scenes with binary sunsets and the same musical setting. Not only do they have in common the two suns and the background music, but the common feature is Luke: each scene shows a key moment in the life of this character.

In the fourth episode of the saga (and the first to be released in the cinema in 1977) this scene occurs prior to the hero's journey. Luke Skywalker, our protagonist, is a young man with a life without major emotions, in a desert planet called Tatooine that offers nothing beyond a simple life.

However, Luke's life would take an unexpected turn: he and his uncle buy two droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO, and Luke finds Princess Leia Organa's holographic message in the smallest of droids, in which she asks for the help of Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and calls him "her only hope."

Once Luke tells his uncle and aunt, Owen and Beru, about the hidden message in R2-D2 and expresses his desire to go into outer space, he has an argument with Owen, who tells him to forget the message and that he needs Luke at home for that year's harvest. Frustrated, Luke retires and contemplates the binary sunset.

We can't help but feel empathy for the young man, seeing in his gaze the desire to grow, to explore, to be a better version of himself, to have adventures and to leave the planet where he feels he remains tied down. It is the prelude to the hero's journey.

Obi-Wan, hidden under the identity of a hermit named Ben Kenobi, tells Luke that he and his father were friends and that they were both Jedi knights, and that a master from the dark side named Darth Vader had murdered his father. Seeing Leia's message, Kenobi offers Luke the chance to travel with him to Alderaan and gives him the lightsaber of his father, Anakin Skywalker.

The imperial stormtroopers would have followed the droids' trail, looking for the Death Star plans hidden in R2-D2, to Luke's uncles' home. By the time he returns home, he finds the carbonized corpses of his family. Thus, our protagonist would begin the journey he so longed for, but with the cost of the loss of his loved ones, which reminds him that the adventures he dreams of having occur in the midst of a war of which he would be a part.

This scene is the end of the third episode of Star Wars (premiered in 2005) and shows us the young uncles of Luke, Owen and Beru, to whom Obi-Wan gives the newborn Luke Skywalker to raise as their own son.

The couple contemplates the binary sunset with Luke in their arms, while Obi-Wan watches from a distance. The scene takes us to the sunset in A New Hope and brings a lot of emotions with it, while once again we listen to "The Force Theme" in the background and think about that baby who, years later, would look at the same horizon dreaming of the adventures he would have.

In 2017, exactly 40 years after the release of A New Hope, we were lucky enough to see Mark Hamill once again playing the role of Luke Skywalker. The eighth episode of the saga told the story of an aging Luke, caught in the guilt and fear of having pushed his nephew, Ben Solo, to the dark side, bringing death and destruction in his wake.

This skeptical and defeated Luke shows the development of a character upon whom a legend was erected. It shows us the human side of a hero who was affected by the fear of the dark side in his nephew and who disconnected from the Force.

However, Rey's presence on the planet Ahch-To, where Luke went into exile, caused him to seek to connect with the Force again and with his sister Leia. In a final display of power, Luke uses the Force to create an astral projection on the planet Crait to confront Kylo Ren and save what was left of the Resistance.

Luke not only faces his fears, but deceives Kylo into believing he's really there. He plays with his nephew's frustration and anger and finally says, "Strike me down in anger and I will always be with you, just like your father." The last lesson Ben would receive from his uncle.

When we realize that Luke is not physically in Crait, we see him mastering the Force from Ahch-To, and he collapses from tiredness. Luke sits up and watches the binary sunset, and Master Yoda's words resound in our minds: "Skywalker, always looking to the horizon." In Luke's gaze we see peace and reconciliation with himself, Luke's physical journey is over... it's time to become one with the Force.

Luke's life cycle is marked in these sunsets; birth, life and death. For this reason, upon seeing this scene, as viewers we were moved to know that we were contemplating the end of this character's life. However, this last scene represents not only Luke's death, but the beginning of a new journey for him.

A journey to a more fascinating and vast world than he had ever dreamed of.
