And the Croatian also received the first red card of the La Liga season, it was also the first red card with the new rules in place.
These clearly specified that the Achilles tendon was to be protected from stomps and Modric paid for this, despite not having done it on purpose.
This is Modric's second expulsion for Real Madrid - the first was in the UEFA Super Cup against Atletico Madrid in 2014 - he left the pitch without really explaining what had happened.
