Nevertheless, much more controversy was caused by the event involving Mertens, who in a very theatrical way fell on the field in the penalty area without contact with the opponent. Referee Davide Massa saw this very differently and immediately pointed to penalty point. Fiorentina players were convinced that after the VAR intervention this decision would be undone, but unfortunately nothing like that happened.
However, a judge's oversight will not prevent Belgian from escaping an individual penalty. Sky Sport journalists argue that the Italian federation became interested in the 32-year-old incident, which may disqualify him for a minimum of two matches. Such a penalty would mean that an experienced player would not, inter alia, appear in the hit clash with Juventus, which will be played in the 2nd round.
Judge Davide Massa and video assistant Paolo Valeri may also be suspended, as reported in an interview with journalists Nicola Rizzoli, who is currently the head of the college of judges at Serie A.
- "This error should be fixed and should not happen. Undoubtedly, arbitrators at their best will be appointed to conduct the next meetings, and we must provide them with the best conditions for their functions. In the matter of Massa and Valeri, there will be an assessment of their psychophysical state, after which we will make the final decision" - said the 47-year-old.
