The second part of the champions league group stage matchday two has just been completed and we have witnessed a handful of amazing fixtures yesterday, one of them being the Lille vs Chelsea game which we will be taking a quick look at in this post. However, let’s quickly take a look at the results of the other fixtures. Liverpool who almost threw away the 3 points against Red Bull Salzburg finally came out with a 4-3 win at home. Dortmund beat Slavia Praha 0-2 away, Napoli drew 0-0 vs Genk away, Zenit beat Benfica 3-1 at home, Ajax beat Valencia 0-3 away, Barca beat Inter Milan 2-1 at home, Lyon beat RB Leipzig 2-0 away.

Back to the Lille vs Chelsea quick recap… Chelsea needed to win this fixture to get themselves into a good position to continue pursuing their aim to progress from the group stage after their unfortunate loss at home against Valencia in the first group stage game this season. At the end, it was a deserved win for Chelsea to match Valencia on same 3 points as they lost against Ajax. Lille has now become the only team the group that are yet to win a game.

It was a tough game for Chelsea away from home as expected. Frank Lampard decided to stick to the same 3-4-3 formation they used against Valencia, but had to make a tactical switch back to their usual 4-3-3 later on in the second half which proved to be the best idea. Chelsea had a good game overall as they showed how good their youngsters are even though it was the first away experience in the champions league for most of the younger players in the team. On the other hand, Lille played in their 4-2-3-1 formation with more focus on counter-attacks.

Chelsea first took the deserved lead in the first half after some good play but saw their lead wiped out after Lille equalizer, creating tension in the minds of the Chelsea camp. However, they had to depend on the late brilliance of Willian to come to their rescue and secure the crucial win in a game that was looking like heading towards another disappointing night.

The final stats of the game shows that Chelsea had more shots in the game, with 63% possession and a pass accuracy of 86%. Lille on the other hand, had less of the ball with 37% possession, and a pass accuracy of 77%. Most of the stats were in favor of Chelsea who finally earned their first win in the champions league under Frank Lampard.

Tammy Abraham and Willian scored the goals for Chelsea, while Victor Osimhen was the goal scorer for Lille.
