Stretched lines don’t mean you have to stretch your budget

in #sports6 years ago (edited)

A kite will not fly properly with stretched lines. If you kite fairly regularly and do a lot of powered moves then chances are you lines have stretched with use. I usually only get one season out of my lines before I need to adjust them for stretching. But I ride a lot.
In my experience, your average person will need to check the lines for stretching with in the 2-3 year range of riding on a weekly basis. If you notice that your kite is back stalling a lot when you are turning especially on lighter wind days, then chances are your center lines are stretched.

The good news is that it is very easy to check to see if your lines have stretched! Also, for most modern bar systems it is very simple to adjust the lines if they have indeed stretched.

To check and see if your lines are stretched first you will need to run out and separate your lines.

Then attach the line ends to a fixed object. I like to use a hook, nail, or a small carabiner.

When you have the bar sheeted in all the way in to the chicken loop the lines should be of equal length.

If your center lines are longer than the steering lines then you have a problem. The kite will not perform properly with the center lines too long.

The good news is that most bars have an adjustment where you can easily make the steering lines longer which will “split the difference” and make the lines essentially equal in length!

Have a look at your bar and see if the steering line ends have this adjustment options. There are a few bar manufacturers that have this adjustment at the bar instead of at the line ends.

Here is what the Cabrinha control bar line ends look like.

The following pictures step you through how to remove, extend, and reattach.

All you have to do is untie the knots as seen below and then feed the extra length through. This adds about 3.5 inches/ ~ 9cm to the steering lines.

With the line length near to equal you will find that the kite performs much better.
In fact, a lot of times people feel like their kite is getting worn out and not flying well, when really the lines just need adjusting!

I hope this Blown tip helps you save a little money and have a great ride.

Enjoy, and ride safely!
