Theresa May has decided not to travel to Russia to support the English team at the World Cup. This was a calculated more that was meant to protest Russia due to the suspected (almost certain) Kremlin involvement in poisoning attacks on British soil.

May is said to be not a fan of soccer, but she has wildly misread the situation. She has advised the royal family and all of her Conservative party members to also boycott the World Cup.

England has been a wonderfully surprising success in the World Cup so far. They have made the semi finals already. May still insists that she doesn’t want to attend because it will ‘legitimize’ Putin’s authority. She needs all of the political food will that she can get at the moment, with multiple potential political disasters surrounding her at home. Going to Russia to support the Three Lions would grant her a huge amount of good will at this crucial time.

Here’s a more in depth article that I wrote about the current British political tumult.
