PROGRESS MADE ON THE CONCUSSION PROTOCOL ROCKING THE NFL
When it comes to the concussion issue which is ravaging the NFL, the NFL executives have decided to face this issue squarely. They have done this by issuing an intervention program which would be done by on a team by team pattern.
In a meeting which was recently held in New York, Dr. Sills who serves as the highest ranking medical doctor of the NFL explained that the NFL has about seven teams who have a higher probability of getting a concussion than other teams. Due to the higher risk which they are exposed to, an intervention process has already started to take place. This intervention program would most likely involve all staffs of the seven teams and also it might include a thorough inspection of their drills which are performed during practice. It would also mean an examination as to the type of helmets which is donned by the players. All this contributes to bringing down the probability of getting a concussion in the NFL.
After the intervention programs were held, Dr. Sills looked happy and explained that about 6 out of 7 of the clubs did see a significant decrease in the rate of concussion which was present in the club. Most of the clubs saw their concussion rate in practice cut by about half between 2017 to about 2018. When the league was examined or analyzed in full, it was also discovered that the concussion which was gotten during the preseason also went down a notch. For example, the number of concussions which was gotten in 2017 was about 91. However, in 2018, that number dropped to about 79. To make things much more exciting and satisfying, the concussions which were suffered during the matches were close to none.
This was due to the adjustments which the NFL made to their rules. Their rules have now been modified to make sure that the game is played on a much safer level than it was in previous years. These rules mostly affect the kickoff plays. This is because when analyzed, it was discovered that a majority of the kickoff plays recorded the highest amount of concussion.
Sills acknowledged the decrease and stated that the NFL is happy with the progress which has been made to the game. He however also admitted the fact that they had so much work to do to make sure that play becomes safer for all players. Sills explained that the NFL was making arrangements to perform a broader type of analysis on teams. This would ensure that they get to the causes of concussion and eliminate the threat it holds to the sport.
In other efforts to reduce the concussion levels, a ban has been placed on helmets which happen to be of the red helmet category. This is done to ensure that NFL is a safe and healthy environment for plays to continue without any risk to health. The NFL is confident that their efforts would pay off.
