Are sportsmen considered role-models?

in #sport5 years ago

Yesterday the Grand Prix Formula one was raced in Brasil. It was a great race to see, Max Verstappen (Holland) did a great job. He started 5th and soon overtook the others and drove at the first place. Right in front of Lewis Hamilton.
Until he got hit by Esteban Ocon, Ocon drove at the back of the field and would have been lapped by Max Verstappen, so there was not much to gain by Ocon.
See the spin of both drivers in the link below.

The spin with his car costed him the first place of the race so he got in second. Of course he was angry, very angry indeed....
After the race Max pushed Ocon a few times because he caused that Max came in second by this stupid action of Ocon. You can see this in the link below.

was the punishment justified?

Max received a penalty for his behaviour. The penalty is 2 days of community service for a good cause. The reason is that Max violated a rule of the FIA which state that drivers have to stay professionals no matter what.

My opinion

I think, although Max was indeed disadvantaged by Ocon, he shouldn't have touched him. No matter how angry he is. I think, with all the eyes of millions of people on them, those drivers are rolemodels to a lot of youngsters, they want to be just like them. When they see it's is ok to push, hit or curse they will copy that and think it it normal.

I can totally understand the adrenaline and anger of Max, I had the same, but it had been for the better if (for instance) Red Bull arranged that someone was there to catch him before he could walk to Ocon.

What is your opinion??

Have a great day !!!

I gladly would have taken a penalty of 20 days of community service for a good cause. Having said that you now must be able to guess what I would have done to that sucker.
Outlapping, haha. They should outlap his ass.

lol !!! The day after there is not much left for Ocon' s credibilty in the international press :) .... He's done that completely to himself :P

Justice has been done ...

I completely agree with you... Like it or not, these people are looked up to by younger people who idolise and learn from their behaviour. It shouldn't be the lesson that it isn't okay for kids to act like this, but when you are rich and famous, it is okay...

Exactly !!!. Thank you !!

I think it is perfectly understandable. And those drivers have chosen to race for the sport. Not to become role models.

In addition, children see worse things on TV and in computer games. Will those children then imitate everything? Have you imitated everything you have ever seen? I do not think so.

And you can always use these incidents to teach your children that they should not react like that.

I am getting really tired of the soft marshmallow mentality nowadays.

But that is just my opinion

True that, and I do understand what you mean. And in a way I agree. But wether they like it or not they do fullfill a role which they didn't choose. So with that in mind it might not always be smart to let yourself go in that way.

For your info, if it happend to me, Ocon probably ate his helmet ;)

I think that accidents happen and taking a page from NASCAR, "rubbing is racing" -Days of Thunder. I also agree that willingly or not, when you put yourself in the public eye like that you need to even more careful about how you react. You aren't going to gain anything by confronting the other guy besides probably drawing a penalty. I am actually impressed that he was still able to get a second place finish.

We were too, normally he wouldn't even be in the top three with the car they drive. But apparently they made some great progress with the speed of the car :) It was a excellent race :)

Yeah, I totally agree... It's not sportive behavior, even if the other one started it. Be the better man!
But hey, this of course makes way better television!!!😉

jammer, was erg mooie race, ik vind dat Max soms inderdaad nog jong als hij is hoog in zijn emotie zit

Klopt, alhoewel hij in rijden en reactie dit seizoen wel erg mooi gegroeid is :)
