Reviews of two Venezuelan books/Reseñas de dos libros venezolanos

I would like to share with you some of my readings. It is important to consider that one of the best ways to discover different cultures is through their literature expressions. That is the reason why I present you this reviews. I hope you enjoy them.

Quiero compartir con ustedes algunas de mis lecturas durante esta cuarentena. Una de las formas más efectivas para conocer diferentes culturas es a través de su expresión literaria. Por eso les presento en esta oportunidad estas dos reseñas. Espero que les gusten.

It's wonderful having books of different genres, to browse them, to feel the warm of paper between the hands, and establish visual contact with ink, colours, and the stories we're being told.

Es maravilloso tener libros de distintos géneros, para hojearlos, sentir la calidez del papel entre las manos, y establecer contacto visual con la tinta, los colores, las historias que nos cuentan.

I pick four or five comics. They are adaptations of texts from Venezuelan writers to comic format, with artwork, a comic condensed with the most crucial of narration, and with the strength of shape and colour to catch the attention of readers.

Escojo unos cuatro o cinco cómics. Son adaptaciones de textos de escritores venezolanos al formato de cómic, con sus ilustraciones, la historia condensada con lo más sustancial de la narración, y con la fuerza de la forma y el color para captar la atención de los lectores.

This is a book with plenty of humour. In Caracas at the beginning of XX century, José and Mercedes know each other. He's a chemist of profession, and she's a medical doctor from Caracas University. At first glance José falls in love and asks her to marry him. She determines that first, they must undergo a "treatment" to know their personalities and find out if they can function as couple. José agrees with the deal. One day José comes up with the bold idea of sending her a x-ray of his heart as a present. Mercedes is surprised with the present, analyses it and diagnoses that José suffers from the early traits of cardiac dilatation, due to so much buzz and cigarettes. She advises him to begin treatment as fast as possible and shatters any kind of marriage relationship. José astonished with the response is left crushed, victim of his own sarcasm.

Este es un libro con mucho humor. En Caracas a comienzos del siglo XX, José y Mercedes se conocen. Él es químico de profesión y ella es doctora de la Universidad de Caracas. Al verla, José se enamora y le propone matrimonio. Ella decide que antes deben someterse a un "tratamiento" para conocer sus caracteres y ver si pueden funcionar como pareja. José acepta el trato. Un día José concibe la atrevida idea de enviarle como regalo una radiografía de su corazón. Mercedes se sorprende con este obsequio, lo analiza y diagnostica que José sufre un comienzo de dilatación del corazón, por tanta bebida y cigarros. Le recomienda que comience de inmediato un tratamiento y rompe cualquier relación de matrimonio. José atónito ante la respuesta queda abatido, víctima de su propio sarcasmo.

It's a comedy from playwright and painter César Rengifo. The illustrations from César Mosquera allude to death: skeletons decorated with wigs and earrings, display sewed mouths and suits with extravagant colours. Here Rengifo recreates a fictional story that takes place in Oklahoma, United States. Amidst a chain of entanglements, of cadavers misappropriated and lost in the world, the company Biological Supplies S.A. Limited creates a whole business organization to trick the unwary in need of money and buy their bodies before they die. Once the contracts with the sellers are signed and after their death, the company plays with the horror of trading with them and resells them to other companies specialized to medicine, aesthetics and nutrition. Evidently, this is a critic to the compsumtion societies that think that money is more important than human beings.

Es una comedia del dramaturgo y pintor César Rengifo. Las ilustraciones de César Mosquera hacen alusión a la muerte: calaveras adornadas con pelucas y aretes, muestran las bocas cosidas y lucen trajes de colores extravagantes. Aquí Rengifo recrea una historia ficcional que transcurre en Oklahoma, Estados Unidos. En medio de una cadena de enredos, de cadáveres sustraídos y perdidos en el mundo, la empresa Suministros Biológicos S.A. Limitada crea toda una organización mercantil para pescar incautos necesitados de dinero y comprarles sus cuerpos antes de morir. Una vez hechos los contratos con los vendedores de cuerpos y tras su muerte, la empresa juega con el horror de comercializar con ellos y los vende a otras empresas dedicadas a la medicina, la estética y la alimentación. Evidentemente, es una crítica a las sociedades de consumo, que piensan primero en el dinero y luego en los seres humanos.
