Pegasus

-Hay más estrellas en el cielo que en esta playa-, dijo Elías a señalando en dirección a alguna parte de Ofiuco, - allá arriba es donde yo trabajo, ahí se está construyendo Pegasus-
-¿Qué es Pegasus?- pregunto Patricia, viendo en la dirección que le señalaba su padre -una estrella-.
-Pegasus es una estación espacial, que gira al rededor de la Tierra-, respondió, mientras le explicaba con las manos como orbitaba Pegasus a la tierra. -Será como una gran rosca y en su centro tendrá un cable que llegará hasta la Tierra para que las personas puedan subir y bajar en un elevador-
Patrícia siguió contemplando en dirección a Ofiuco, mientras apretaba sus ojos tratando inútilmente de ver donde estaba Pegasus, mientras imaginaba esa rosca que su padre decía que sería la estación espacial.
Elías Boltzmann era parte del equipo de desarrollo de los motores que desplegarían el cable del elevador orbital, desde la estación espacial a la Tierra. Había estado trabajando en ello durante dos años, tomando turnos de tres meses, con tres meses de descaso en la Tierra entre cada turno. La semana próxima tendría que viajar a la base espacial para iniciar lo que sería su quinto y último turno.
Pegasus, sería la estación espacial más grande jamás construida, estaba pensada como un gigantesco astillero de naves espaciales, con capacidad para la construcción simultanea de ciento cincuenta naves colonizadoras o treinta arcas. Sería como una pequeña ciudad industrial, con capacidad para treinta mil trabajadores con sus familias.
La construcción de la Pegasus se llevaba a cabo desde su núcleo central hacia el exterior, el primer objetivo y el que demoraría más tiempo, sería la puesta en marcha del elevador orbital, una vez que éste entrara en operaciones, el trabajo se aceleraría considerablemente, pues los materiales y equipos desarrollados en tierra serían transportados de forma casi continua y no sería necesario contar con las imprevisibilidades del clima, ni esperar ventanas de lanzamiento, para poder poner en órbita las naves de transporte, eso sin contar con la limitada capacidad de carga de las naves mismas.
Pegasus sería la primera de las cinco estaciones que orbitarían la Tierra en órbita geoestacionaria, una vez que estuviese avanzada su construcción, se iniciaría la construcción de Hydra, Draco y Eridanus, las cuales a diferencia de Pegasus serían enteramente habitacionales, pensadas para alojar a las personas que luego serían transportadas en naves arcas a Marte y Titán.
Posterior a la construcción de éstas, se iniciaría la de la última de las cinco, Cetus, que al igual que Pegasus, sería un astillero, sólo que más pequeño y estaría destinada exclusivamente a la construcción de otras estaciones espaciales que luego se transportarían a las órbitas de Marte Titán y Europa, donde se construiría la última de las colonias del sistema solar.
Pegasus será la plataforma que permitirá iniciar la colonización humana en otros sistemas estelares, en ella serán construidas las naves colonizadoras que viajaran fuera del sistema solar, en busca de un nuevo hogar para la humanidad; también será donde se construirán las naves arca en las que se trasportará a los habitantes de la Tierra a las colonias de Marte, Titán y Europa. Pegasus está pensada para ser por varios siglos la mayor factoría jamás construida por el hombre.
Para Elías su último viaje a Pegasus comenzaría pronto, su trabajo en la instalación del cable del ascensor orbital terminaría pronto, en un par de meses los motores estarían operativos e iniciaría el despliegue del cable. Elías regresará a la Tierra para trabajar en la construcción de la base Samuel Hilbert, donde estarán anclados los cable y desde la que serán lanzadas las capsulas de ascenso, sin embargo, él nunca volverá a dejar la Tierra, para el momento del inicio del éxodo, habrá perecido en un accidente durante las primeras pruebas de las cápsulas; su hija Patricia, para entonces de veinticinco años, su esposo y su aun no nato hijo Elías, formarían parte de la primera oleada de colonos en viajar a Titán desde Eridanus, en una arca construida en Pegasus.

-There are more stars in the sky than on this beach-, said Elias pointing to some part of Ophiuchus, - up there is where I work, Pegasus is being built there-
-What is Pegasus? - asked Patricia, looking in the direction indicated by his father -a star-.
-Pegasus is a space station, which revolves around the Earth-, he answered, while explaining with his hands how Pegasus orbited the earth. -It will be like a big donut and in its center you will have a cable that will reach the Earth so that people can get on and off in an elevator-
Patrícia continued contemplating in the direction of Ophiuchus, while she squeezed her eyes trying uselessly to see where Pegasus was, while she imagined that thread that her father said would be the space station.
Elias Boltzmann was part of the development team of the engines that would deploy the space elevator cable, from the space station to Earth. He had been working on it for two years, taking turns for three months, with three months of rest on Earth between each shift. Next week he would have to travel to the space base to start what would be his fifth and final turn.
Pegasus, would be the largest space station ever built, was designed as a giant shipyard spacecraft, with capacity for the simultaneous construction of a hundred and fifty colonizing ships or thirty ark. It would be like a small industrial city, with capacity for some thirty thousand workers and their families.
The construction of the Pegasus was carried out from its central core to the outside, the first objective and the one that would take the longest, would be the start-up of the orbital elevator, once it entered operations, the work would accelerate considerably, because the materials and equipment developed on land would be transported almost continuously and it would not be necessary to have the unpredictability of the weather, nor wait for launch windows, to be able to put the transport ships in orbit, even without the limited load capacity of the ships themselves.
Pegasus would be the first of the five stations that would orbit the Earth in geostationary orbit, once its construction was completed, the construction of Hydra, Draco and Eridanus would begin, which unlike Pegasus would be entirely housing, designed to house the people who later would be transported in ark to Mars and Titan.
After the construction of these, would begin the last of the five, Cetus, which like Pegasus, would be a shipyard, only smaller and would be used exclusively for the construction of other space stations that would then be transported to the Orbits of Mars Titan and Europa, where the last of the colonies of the solar system would be built.
Pegasus will be the platform that will allow to initiate the human colonization in other star systems, in it the colonizing ships that will travel outside the solar system will be built, in search of a new home for humanity; it will also be where the ark ships will be built in which the inhabitants of the Earth will be transported to the colonies of Mars, Titan and Europe. Pegasus is thought to be for centuries the largest factory ever built by man.
For Elías his last trip to Pegasus would begin soon, his work in the installation of the cable of the orbital elevator would finish soon, in a pair of months the motors would be operative and would initiate the unfolding of the cable. Elijah would return to Earth to work on the construction of the Samuel Hilbert base where the cables will be anchored and from which the ascension capsules will be thrown, however, he would never leave the Earth, by the time of the beginning of the exodus, he will have perished in an accident during the first tests of the capsules; his daughter Patricia, then twenty-five years old, her husband and her still unborn son Elias would be part of the first wave of settlers to travel to Titan from Eridanus, in an ark built in Pegasus.
