The Death of the Seas

-It was happening here, too-, Elena thought as she guided the submersible around what looked like the sunken ruins of some ancient city, infinity of ash bubbles, mud and lava, arose from the network of cracks in the ocean floor, had observed the same in all around the crater of the pole, but it was the first time she saw it in the submerged continent, this confirmed what was reported in several papers published since 1468.

The seismic activity had increased remarkably in the last twenty years, the movement of the tectonic plates had accelerated and the fissures that opened as they moved were erupting the magma and with it toxic gases that were contaminating the waters around it. Until a few years ago this phenomenon occurred only in the crater, but now it was happening everywhere.

He continued touring the vicinity of what looked like an old office building, around the monolithic letters that marked what should be his entrance and which Elena assumed was the name of the company that once operated in that structure, swam a small group of dolphins that, first they were driven away by the submersible, but then began to follow it for several minutes, very soon this part of the ocean would no longer be habitable for these creatures, she thought, as she continued her journey.

Already on the surface, aboard the boat, she extracted the samples of water and gases that had taken on the ocean floor and deposited the cylinders in the sample box, while Frederick approached him from behind the cabin, carrying a big cup of tea.

-You could see it for yourself, right-, he said, while she was crouched next to the sample box.

-Damn Frederick, I told you not to do that!-, she said in anger, as she sat up abruptly, -I do not like being approached from behind while I'm distracted.-

-Excuse me, but usually you are not aware of what is happening around you, so it is inevitable to give you a scare, it is always funny to see your face of surprise - he said holding out his cup while smiling broadly. -Then, tell me what you saw-

-It's just like you told me, I counted no less than fifty chimneys in the whole area, some were quite large, I had never seen them so far south- she said apparently dismayed, while sipping the tea, wrinkling her face, -this crap has a horrible taste! - exclaimed returning the cup to Frederick.

-Yes, there is no sweetener on the boat, I forgot to bring it - he took the cup out of her hands and started taking it, - It's not just here, a team that explored the south of the continent also found fissures from where emanated sulfur of hydrogen and hydrocyanic acid-

-How many reports are there already?- Elena asked, walking to the booth.

-I'm not sure, but there are many, I know there are all over the northern hemisphere and there are several reports from the south, but I'm not sure how many, according to the projections of a team from the oceanographic foundation, the concentration of dissolved toxic gases , in little more than fifty years it will reach incompatible levels for life ... -.

-What about those who are emanating to the atmosphere? - interrupted.

-As far as I know, the atmospheric purification systems can filter them, so they do not represent a risk yet, but if the gas production rate continues, there will come a time when they will not be enough - he said after taking a long drink of the Cup of tea.

-Perfect, just when the atmosphere had almost been purified after the disaster caused by Ether, now this - Elena said as she took off her thermal suit-

-Yes, but you are not understanding the seriousness of the situation, the concentration of toxics in the ocean will end up poisoning all life in it, and without phytoplankton there will be no oxygen to breathe, the filtering devices do not generate oxygen, they only clean the air- Frederick rebuked her.

-Of course I've noticed that Frederick, do you think I'm stupid? - said visibly annoyed, - we must return to review these samples. I hope that for the sake of all of us this is less serious than it seems, because otherwise the devices that are being used to terraform Mars will do nothing to prevent what is coming.

Half an hour later, almost without words again, they took anchors and headed for the continent, the trip would last about twelve hours, on their way, the sonar showed them several schools of fish, as well as whales, dolphins and other marine mammals, apparently In migration to the south, what was not common, neither in this nor at any other time of the year, they deduced that they fled from the polluted waters further north.
