Star Wars in real life. Will we have a war, thousands of miles above the Earth?

in #space6 years ago

Why can it happen? How would it look like a space war? How is the US reacting? Is Trump seriously? Will the war break? Read this special on @helamia, for answers to all these questions.

China, Russia and the US are competing for military advantage in orbit. US espionage agencies warned in February that China and Russia are developing ballistic missiles and other weapons that could be used to hit American satellites in the coming years. Both countries have successfully tested spatial warfare technology. In 2007, China used a rocket to crash one of its outdated satellites, which came into orbit 537 miles over Planet Earth. Russia successfully conducted a flight test for an anti-jet rocket in 2015. The US has long owned these capabilities. In 1985, an American fighter plane successfully launched a rocket to an American scientific satellite. "Space is no longer a peaceful place," says Deborah Lee James, secretary of the Air Force at the time of President Obama. "There is a real possibility that a conflict here on Earth may further extend to space."

Why can it happen?

Space is vital strategically. About 1,700 active satellites are currently in orbit around the Earth - almost half are sent from the US - and they are critical of the economy and daily activity of modern life. 33 US Air Force GPS satellites provide time signals used by stockbrokers and cellular networks as well as navigation applications like Google Maps or Uber. Weather forecasts, videoconferencing, instant credit card authorizations, connections between banks and cable television, all depend on these satellites. The US military relies heavily on communications and surveillance satellites for virtually all of its activities, from North Korean weapons monitoring, to field co-ordination. Satellites constantly come across the Earth to detect attacks against the US, looking for missile launch signals. "Space is fundamental to our way of doing war," says General John Raymond, commander of the Air Force Spatial Command. "And it's fundamental to our way of life."

What would a real space battle look like?

It could take different forms. Programmers could enter as hackers on satellites to disband or command. Earth-based lasers can be used to mislead or dazzle satellite sensors, making them worthless. In a more aggressive attack, states can use the force to eliminate rivals' satellites, ballistic missiles, or using suicide bombing satellites to collide with targets. The Russians launched a satellite in 2014, which appeared to be in a position to maneuver the attack, alarming the US intelligence service.

How is the US reacting?

The Army is taking steps to strengthen its satellites in the face of attacks. It plans to launch satellites to serve as a backup if critical systems are destroyed and to develop smaller satellites that will be more difficult to target, as well as defense satellites capable of differentiating or hindering risks . Of course, many of the details are classified. In March, President Trump called for the establishment of a new army branch dedicated to space war. "Space is a place to fight, just like earth, air and sea," Trump said. "We have the Air Force, we will also have the Spatial Force."

Is Trump seriously?

Hard to say, but he's not the first to suggest it. Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld called for the creation of space troops in 2001, but the idea was set aside after the September 11 attacks, which shifted the military's focus in the fight against terrorism on the ground. In these moments, the US Air Force Spatial Command is responsible for nearly 90 percent of US military space operations, involving 36,000 people worldwide. But those who support space force argue that it was not given priority. A space force just like the earthly one would legitimize space as a vital battlefield, just as the creation of the US Air Force in 1947 was an acknowledgment of the importance of air power. But the Pentagon opposes the idea of creating another bureaucracy.

Will the war arise?

Spatial war rules are largely unpublished. The 1967 Space Agreement prohibits states to put weapons of mass destruction into space, but there is no comprehensive deal for other types of weapons, or to protect satellites. In 2008, the US rejected a deal handed over to the UN by Russia and China, which would stop the weapons in space.

When the EU submitted a similar proposal in 2014, it was backed by the US, but China and Russia rejected it. The consequences of a total war in space would be tragic. In a scenario, the ruins of destroyed cosmic ships could trigger a chain reaction that would wipe out all satellites in orbit, filling the Earth with spatial waste, and making space unusable for entire generations. "The challenges of a lifetime in space are not fully understood," says Todd Harrison, director of the Space Security Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "We have no history to rely on."

If they start using a lot of lasers then we won't see much of anything. Some spaceships will float across from each other and one will explode.

Ye i agree to that. Also some pieces would fall down on earth from the destroyed satelites or ships and rockets.
And we might be able to see explosions in the evening and during the night...

I see you use upvote bots, are you satisfied with it? i have never tried it,
greetings @helamia

You're welcome @traderr, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for stopping by.
Ye i use bots and im not satisfried with them but there is only one purpose i do that. Here's the answer:
I send 1 sbd i get 2.3 upvote that means i get back 95% of my sbd back and free steem power due to upvotes.
Using bots is good but most people do not know how bots work and they overbid bots so they screw everyone else inclusing themselves and then we get low upvotes and we lose sbd so it has positive and negative sides. But overall i would suggest not to use them that much.
I intend to stop using them after i get 300+ steem power.
