“Today we look back on things like slavery, racism, sexism and child labour in disbelief. What things do you think in 50 years time people will come to look back on in the same way?” - ecoTrain Question Of The Week”

"We believe that you made the Earth a paradise, you live on the Moon and landed on Mars." *
"[...] We know that you will live better than us, you will fly across the galaxy and make our land beautiful" *

*(c) EAOmedia translation by @sashagenji.

These quotes are from messages which were left in 1967 in various cities of Russia to future generations.

50 years passed fast and in 2017 these messages have become public. People look at them with astonishment, beginning to compare what was predicted then with what we have now. It turns out that people believed in us, they thought we would do much greater things than we were able to achieve so far. Furthermore, some negative aspects of our modern life their generation would not even imagine us to do.

They believed that we would be better, more responsible for our actions and that we would do a lot of great things for growth of humanity and the Planet.

We have reached the point where we are now. To a certain point we have created truly great things, but other of our creations are different and we have nothing to be proud of.

What will our descendants say after living another 50 years and looking back at our era? Would they judge our actions? Do you think they can see us as the hero of this video?

Do you think there are things they would like to say “NO”and wished that we stop doing them? I truly believe there are things like this so lets consider some of them.

They would say “No” to abusive use of environment and resources

They will be the ones facing the effects of global pollution and the mountains of rubbish and trash accumulated by that time in vast quantities. Our descendants will be surprised at how our generation could simply ignore the fact that we are gradually turning our blue planet into one big dump, with a very limited number of living creatures existing on it.

For them, it will be a real mystery that it was possible to cut down forests in tons, to drain garbage into the world ocean, to release tons of chemical gases into the atmosphere ONLY in order to get more colored paper called money.

They will be surprised that we forgot that they will have to deal with this. That they will have to urgently search for opportunities and ways of solving the catastrophe that we have seen, but chose to ignore. And they will look at all those who now state that the problem of pollution and global warming does not exist as people who tried to steal their chances to come and live happily on the Planet.

They would say “No” to Wars

I believe that a generation that will live in the future will be able to find ways of mutual co-existence both on a huge planet Earth and beyond. I believe that looking back to our time they will be surprised and shake their heads in a misunderstanding of why we needed all these numerous wars with countless victims and destruction?

“Peace on Earth” by Valerie Hart.

The future generation simply will not be able to understand why it was so important to make rivers of blood in various regions of the Earth? And moreover, why it was impossible to find peaceful solutions to the problems modern society faces?

They would say ”No” to Animals suffering

The generation of the future will be puzzled as to the harm humanity does to the other living creatures on the Planet especially animals.

How could we make animals born to be free our slaves?

“Born to be wild” by BanksyImage Source

How we created a huge industry of their torture just to enjoy steaks or fried wings?

And how we turned some of them into a kind of semblance of ourselves.

Missing love and attention to kids

Women of Europe and America have long fought for their rights and here they have reached a new position in society. They can earn money on a par with a man, start corporations, vote and do many more interesting things. Only now the child of the future will be wondering why his mother was always busy with something else, when he needed her most of all? The question arises as to why modern women suddenly began to view the birth of a child as some factor that hindered their career, and if they were to give birth, do they have to put up responsibilities for raising them to grandparents, nannies, schools? They would wonder why our generation has put such an important and responsible step as the birth and education of the child to a secondary place, putting the work to the first?

They would say: “Education matters”

They would look on the way how we teach our kids and do not believe it. We send children to school so they will sit at school desks instead to play outside and learn the worlds’ wonders. We tell them different theories, but we do not teach them how to really live. We do not tell them that everything living around is really precious and that you need to respect everything and anyone around. We from them based on society’s expectations instead of encouraging kids and help to grow the skills and gifts which they already posses.

We forget what it means to be children and we want the child to become an obedient toy and do things that are convenient for us. Sometimes we even forget that we ourselves shape our future through them because what we invest in it will sprout and become our reality. So after 50 years they will look back on us and tell that we were wrong.

What is the conclusion?

Perhaps the world in 50 years will be a completely different place and people of the future will look at the world in which we live now with great surprise. BUT we still have a chance to lay a better future for them. It all starts very simply - to think about what each of us can do today, so that tomorrow they have much more than what we have now and that they simply will not have the opportunity to be surprised by our short-sightedness.

Pollution and environment yes. It will be a huge focus in 50 years as the effects will affect their everyday lives.
Parenthood yes. I think evrything will come full circle and people will be encouraged to raise their family.

War no. There will always be war. People will always fight. It doesn't matter if its over religion, race, power, money, resources. There will always be people looking to have more which will inevitably lead to war.
Treatment of animals no. We need the food. Hopefully animal cruelty is banned and laws enforced with regards to owning the animals but we will always need to farm meat.

great answer to a great question, I hope we move away from eating meat and everyone take responsibility for how they life on the earth.
In reality obesity will probably be something the future generations will talk about, it cannot be ignored at this point.
I hope that birth will become sacred again, like you have discussed and people will look back and realize that what women fought for in the end is something that has dis empowered them.
Hopefully the way refugees are treated in so many countries will be something that is frowned upon in the future also.

Wow, this was such a comprehensive answer to this question. I agree with a lot of what you said. The future generation will most likely look back and said why were these people so harsh to the environment. I also agree with @niallon11 that there will most likely be war even then. The reasons will obviously change but there will be war but I do hope that doesn't happen.

I love the 50 years ago tie in! Beautiful answer to a tough question - the future looks bright, but in 50 years we will be the great grandparents saying, 'Kids these days....'
