Today's Weed News For December 26th 2018 #THAILAND
For today's weed news we go to the great nation of Thailand.
As a "gift to the people", the Thai military government just announced that they are legalizing medical cannabis in the country!
That's right, Thailand's National Legislative Assembly voted just month 166 to 0 to approve new legislation that will give people the right to used medical cannabis under the supervision of a doctor.
The new law is set to take effect once it is signed by their King and written about in Thailand's official government newspaper.
Until now, Thailand, and really Southeast Asia as a whole, have been known to have some of the world's harshest anti-cannabis laws on the books. But that seems to slowly be changing. Earlier this month the Philippines announced that a possible medical marijuana legalization bill could find its way to their president's desk in the near future as well.
Although people with valid medical prescriptions or medical marijuana ID cards in Thailand will not be prosecuted for cannabis use anymore, those without proper paperwork or those using weed recreationally will still face up to five years in jail for possession of up to 10 kg.
I wonder how possession is treated when it's just a couple of grams, because 10 kg is a lot of weed man. I feel like if you get caught with 20 lbs in the States you might actually face penalties equal to or harsher.
"This is a New Year's gift from the National Legislative Assembly to the government and the Thai people," said Somchai Sawangkarn, the man who headed the committee responsible for drafting the new bill.
Thailand will be holding general elections in February and some believe that the military-run National Legislative Assembly's move to legalize medical weed may have something to do with them wanting to stay in power past the next two months.
But either way, I do feel like this is a very important development in the region and that it may signal some vast, positive changes in the world of cannabis in Southeast Asia.
