24 Karat Gold "Buddha" Pendant
A few years ago, my aunt gave me this pendant as a gift. The pendant is 24 karat gold. The pendant is inscribed "9999" which denotes the purity of the gold. The pendant is protected by acrylic, which prevents scratches. I assume that this pendant was made in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is famous for its 24 karat gold jewelry. In Hong Kong, 24 karat gold jewelry is referred to as "Chuk Kam." The word "Chuk Kam" is Cantonese for "pure gold." Chuk Kam jewelry is popular in Asia as a portable means of owning gold. Unlike bars or coins, Chuk Kam jewelry can be worn and carried anywhere. My pendant depicts Bo Dai, an Asian folk deity. Bo Dai is depicted as a jolly fat man. The Chinese believe rubbing Bo Dai's stomach would give you good luck. Bo Dai is often confused as being the Buddha by Westerners.
