Catching Up On The Month
I have a few things I need to write about that have happened so far this month.
First, highway signs. I tried to get a photo from my folders but I have no clue where I put it. I might still find it and I will add it if I do.
A little background. It was back in 2018 or early 2019 that I started an email campaign to request signs be placed along Highway 21, Ontario. These signs would remind drivers to turn on their full headlights for safety and visibility. Highway 21 is known for excessive speed and frequent passing which leads to near-miss situations. The easier it is to see oncoming cars the less likely you'll pass when the way isn't sufficient enough to do so safely.
Anyways, we used to have the signs LIGHTS ON FOR SAFETY up around the bend in 21 east around Allenford but they were removed back in the 80s I think. There are a number of different agencies that handled highway signage and after years many signs were taken down (or hit by snowplows) as no one maintained them.
I wrote a number of different departments, Ontario Highways, Bruce County Highways and the Ontario Provincial Police, and I was able to secure new signs for the highway. The signs went up in August 2019 between Goderich, Ontario and Kincardine, Ontario. I mentioned them during this interview: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?ref=external&v=479558605989858
For the next year or so, several months after the signs went up in particular, I noticed a dramatic increase in the number of drivers who made sure their full headlights were on (yes, during the day) instead of just daytime running lights. I would peg the compliance around 90-95% in that stretch of highway which was amazing.
So, here it is 2021 and I tweeted to 511Ontario about getting signs up for the stretch from Kincardine to Owen Sound. It was Twitter so I didn't really expect a reply. Not only did I get confirmation of my tweet, but by the next day I think (sorry too lazy to look it up) they messaged me back stating the signs would indeed be put up on the remaining stretch of Highway 21 in spring 2021. AWESOME!
While I definitely absolutely acknowledge and appreciate the response and support from the appropriate agencies, I take personal pride in knowing I played a role in getting those signs up on Highway 21 from Goderich, Ontario soon all the way to Owen Sound, Ontario.
Second, Porch Pirate in Ontario.
Let me see if I can find a link to the video: https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/kqskln/full_video_man_attempts_to_steal_a_package_has
OK, first if you want to call the police the number is NINE ONE ONE. Aside from that, this has to be one of the most hilarious videos I have seen in months. I love the comments from the homeowner "You want me to get you a shovel?" and "It's front wheel drive you need to get the wheels on the ground". In true Canadian fashion the homeowner who was having his package stolen from his front porch is offering help to the thief during his get-away.
Best video of the Month I'd say.
Third, and not really news worthy. I finished five seasons of Law & Order Criminal Intent, a personal achievement :) I know, but hey it is something.
I have a number of astronomical questions and some theories to discuss which I will save for another blog post, hopefully later tonight. I need to take a break from the computer now. Thanks for your support.
