Fractal Writing Contest #11 - A Short Story - "Crux"
Prof. Graham Hurley was deep in a cave in the mountains, approximately 120 km outside of Tehran. As an American he would not be welcome here. He had enlisted the help of the American government to smuggle him in and hopefully out again... but as always he gave them a bogus research project; just as he had done at the university - so many times before; where he was Head of Research: Middle-Eastern Archaeology.
Hurley had a huge secret, and it was taking its toll on him. The once sociable and vibrant PhD Graduate once speculated upon as being the future Dean – degenerated into an absent minded professor. He was often late and disheveled; or over-looking some administrative function. Had it been anyone else, the university would have considered releasing him. He was always deeply preoccupied; so much so that the concerns of his colleagues never registered. As his lectures ended he would make a bee-line for his vehicle which was now dated and neglected, and hurry back to his basement.
Ten years earlier, before the embassy was shut down in Tehran – Hurley stumbled across a withering scroll in a cave not too far from here. It was written by a local tribe which has long since died out; he knew this because it was written in a dialect he couldn’t immediately understand. It took him many years to get to the gist, of its contents. From what he could tell; he was hunting for an artifact which described the foundations and framework of the Christian religion. He dubbed the artifact “Crux” in his transcripts...
