My Oldest Garment
My oldest garment is my suit or jacket still part of my wardrobe till now.
Where and when did you buy (or did they buy) that garment?
I bought the material for the jacket at the popular Akpan-andem market in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
By this time I had finished my study at the College and was a sales' boy in my uncle's provision shop. That happened in the year 2007.
The person who sold the material, Mr. Aniefiok Jumbo referred me to a Tailor that can sew men's suits still in that same market.
Tell us a story/anecdote that you have experienced with that garment
The sewing of this garment came into my mind because my graduation ceremony was fast approaching, and I needed to dress on suit.
Though I would have purchased a ready-to-wear suit, which would had been less expensive, I refused because the fabric material I was looking for was not found among the ready-made suits.
So after the tailor finished sewing it, I came to like it so much that I bought a suitcase for it and hung in my wardrobe ready for the graduation day.
On the graduation day, I dressed on my new suit and was very happy to have appeared in my first ever locally-made suit.

Imagine if that garment could talk... What do you think it would say about you?
If the garment could talk, it would say to me; 'thank you for making me to meet so many people that I did not think I would ever met in my lifetime' . This is because I have used it in so many important occasions.
It will also thank me for taking good care of it. If I will want to sell it out today as fairly used item, the price will still worth how it was purchased and sew then.
Why have you refused to throw it away?
The reasons behind my suit still being around is that;
- It reminds me of the stipend that came from my first engagement after the College.
- It tells me how I was appreciated after my graduation from the College.
- It was a good material. It stood a test of time. And it is still fitting to wear.
My invitation goes to @dequeen, @akareen and @manuelhooks to tell us about their oldest garments.
