Hello Steemians! My name is Ed and this is my second participation in this wonderful contest! :))

In the previous round of the contest I told about the Victory Day, and today I will tell about one more truly national and beloved holiday of Russia - this is the New year!
This holiday has very deep roots and was celebrated by our ancestors in the days of ancient Russia. But then it was a ritual, and it was very different from the modern holiday symbols and attributes. But all in good time…
Did not find pictures that would have all the necessary symbols of the modern holiday, although these pictures - not all :)
It is important that there is a festively decorated New year (Christmas) tree toys, good Father Frost (not Santa Claus, although they are very similar) with a magic staff and a big bag with gifts, Snow maiden (his granddaughter)…

1.jpg

Father Frost comes on new year's eve on December 31 at 12 o'clock with gifts to all children and fulfills their desires, which they send him in advance and put under the tree, which is put in each family. And in the morning happy kids find gifts under the New year (Christmas) tree. And adults celebrate approach of New year, with wires of old almost all new year's eve. Later-about this much detail. While tell you what symbols meant in the ancient times.

1a.jpg

Father Frost was not good at all... it was a symbol of the God of death in the fierce winter, and instead of the staff was a scythe – death with a scythe! The New year (Christmas) tree was not decorated with toys, and hung on a real ate pieces of meat, usually the giblets of animals that would appease the God of death. And the bag behind him was not with gifts, and to collect his gruesome harvest victims of winter frost.
And then the snow maiden was not at all, she came much later...

Now everything is quite different and it is a holiday of fun and waiting for new changes with the arrival of the New Year.

3.jpg

Prepare for the holiday all start in advance. Adults buy gifts for children and loved ones, buy a lot of products for the holiday table. And children prepare Christmas costumes and write letters to Santa Claus with wishes. They expect that he will come to them on new year's eve on the Troika from the city of Velikiy Ustyug.

4.jpg

... As a rule, a festive table is prepared a lot of treats, salads, snacks, pickles, marinades, main dishes, dumplings, pastries, birthday cake or cake, fruit, berries, champagne. In refrigerators of this ready meal more then enough for a couple of days :)

5.jpg

But almost everywhere are required to prepare the salad (foreigners call it Russian salad).

6.jpg

And it is prepared a lot :)
In addition, another mandatory dish is herring under a fur coat.

7.jpg

And of course necessarily oranges or tangerines! In addition, for more than 40 years the whole country with great pleasure watching the Soviet two – part television film directed by Eldar Ryazanov, created in 1975 - “The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath.”

8.jpg

For a festive table sit down in 10 hours to see off the old year, watching a great movie, celebrate the new year, watch the movie and then all poured into the streets, where there are festivities with fireworks.

9.jpg

Finish the celebration in the early morning.
And in the morning and afternoon the first day of January in the streets almost no one - everyone is asleep :)
See you.

Hi @edwardsun55. I enjoy your love for your country and the fact that you are able to produce more than one post on the holidays you celebrate. However, you need to take note that the third round in this series of contests is not about holidays. Please read the post about the contest again. I think you will enjoy the actual topic too.

I have given this entry a number and upvoted both your comment and this post but you will be unable to win with this entry as it is not on the correct topic. You are welcome to add another entry.

Good day, dear @reonlouw
I offer my deepest apologies for my embarrassment! That's awful! But if you only knew how long and loud I laughed at my mistake, when I read your message and realized how stupid my post about the New Year looks with a completely different theme of the contest! I laughed like a horse! :))))
Once again, please forgive me for my mistake. Now I will write a new post.
Thank you for your patience.

I would love to learn more about all the amazing dishes you've displayed. That pink is something else for sure!
What an amazing post!!!
I found it thanks to @mmunited's Pay it Forward curation contest entry. Keep up the awesome work!

Good day @viking-ventures
Thank you very much.
I apologize for not responding sooner. Sorry was very busy these days. You are right, many of these dishes are really unusual and very tasty))) in our family I am responsible for the meat and a little fish dishes, the rest is prepared by my wife and makes it great! What you liked is called Herring under a fur coat! If you want - I'll write you the recipe.

I hope you will share many recipes as the holiday season draws near again. In exchange, I'll try to share some of the ones from my family as well. I draw from a Scandinavian tradition plus years in the UK... I'm not super crazy for herring due to the huge number of tiny bones, but I'm sure you have good ways to work around this.

That is a very interesting holiday celebration. The way you described New Year celebration is like how I knew Christmas to be celebrated.

With the bad story behind Father Frost, I wonder what made the occasion a celebration instead of something to be feared of. Any idea about that?

By the way, I came across your article through @mmunited who featured it in his post as an entry for the Pay It Forward Curation Contest. The contest is open to everyone so you are welcome to join.

Thank you very much @macoolette, but I probably missed it again with the competition :)
What as for why the holiday was fun? Forget all the bad things ))))
And this tradition was very ancient, when Russia was still a pagan. Over time, the people began to better protect themselves from the severe winter frosts and store food well for the long winter. And in the seasons change began to celebrate New year and the holiday slowly began to transform into the one which we know it today.
By the way, now in Russia the new year is celebrated from 4 holiday!!!! A little-Catholic Christmas (December 25), then the same new year (December 31), then Orthodox Christmas (January 7) and... old New year (January 14th) is according to the old calendar. ))))

I am not sure which competition you are referring to but I am sure there will be next time. Keep going... 😊

Whoah! This is my very first time to hear four celebrations of new year! 😃 But you specified different names of celebrations for those four dates so I guess Russia has just generalized all the four to be "new year", is it?

Here in the Philippines, we have that Christmas for December 25, New Year for January 1, Epiphany or Three Kings on January 6 (but the church would celebrate this on whichever date is the first Sunday of the year). The next new year celebration is sometime in February for Chinese New Year following their own Chinese calendar. Though that is for Chinese, we have many Filipino-Chinese here in the country that their Chinese tradition (at least for their new year) is recognized. The date is not fixed. I don't know why or how their calendar goes. 😊

Chinese new year some of us also celebrate :) Russians have a very generous soul and everything is done from the heart! Here is the New Year celebration too - from the heart :)))) And So is celebrated (some even without a break from 25 December to 14 January ))))
But seriously, it is because of the calendar. In tsarist (old) Russia, all events relating to the period before February 1 , 1918 , date from the Julian calendar ("old" style), from February 1, 1918 - Gregorian ("new" style). So both holiday - Christmas and New year are celebrated two times )))) The difference - 14 days.
But Christmas are Catholic and Orthodox, and new year are the new and the old!
The Old New Year !!! It's Russia!!! )))

The Old New Year !!! It's Russia!!!

I thought it is only in the Philippines where people still believe in old traditions or beliefs At least that does not make us alone. 😃
