I'm running a pod hd500 through the interface and it sounds so digital and false.
I had to put the ampire plug in on top to make it sound marginally better.
How does one record good metal tones?

All day. Everyday. I also love the Fabfilter Saturn, as it's multiband and you can use different amp simulations on separate frequency spectrums of the signal.
... for plugging in a guitar and immediately getting working, nothing short of a Kemper is going to beat Guitar Rig.
