A Lucky Visit To Nymans

Bricks in Nymans Great Hall

In the 1920s Leonard Messel and his wife Maud transformed Nymans house into a Medieval manor house.

Sadly, in 1947, there was a big fire and much, but not all of the house, was destroyed.

They were unable to restore the house as wartime restrictions on rebuilding were still in place.

This photograph shows part of what is left of the Great Hall.

However, the National Trust, who now owns the property is planning on renovating it and turning it into a restaurant.

We were very fortunate that we decided to visit the gardens today because it is unusual for the ruins to be open. In fact, they only open to the public on 4 days a year!

So, depending upon when we next visit, this might have been our last chance to see the ruins.

This is my contribution to Brick Saturday.

Is it always interesting to look at the old architecture, or the that is left of it. Let us hope, that someday this building will also be restored. I hope that the new owners will try to maintain the interior of the restaurant in the same style. I think it was an interesting building, @gillianpearce

Yep. It is a really interesting building @madlenfox. Much of the house is still in it's original condition and can be visited.

I actually like the ruins so not sure what I feel about turning them into a restaurant. At the moment I think they have the best of both worlds. 😊

I like the mixture of materials from bricks to stone to concrete, @gillianpearce. I hope the National Trust can make this place into a nice meeting place and tell its history.

The rest of the house, that wasn't destroyed in the fire, is open to the public and is very interesting @cryptocariad and the gardens are gorgeous. All in all it's a great place to visit. 😊

In the bright side, the renovation will likely showcase the ruins, while helping to preserve then. It wood be fun to see that photo taken from the same spot, when the restaurant is complete.

Good idea @fotosdenada. I will try and remember to do that! 😁
