The Seven Day Beer Challenge #3 – Weis by Hacker-Pschorr

In day 3 of the beer challenge I present you a German Weis Beer. You cannot go more classic than that.

Brewery

Hacker-Pschorr is a brewery in Munich, formed in 1972 out of the merger of two breweries, Hacker and Pschorr. Hacker was founded in 1417, 99 years before the enactment of the Reinheitsgebot Purity Law of 1516. As one of six breweries located within Munich's city limits, its beers are among those served at Oktoberfest.

In the late 18th century, Joseph Pschorr, the man we see on the label, bought the Hacker brewery from his father-in-law Peter-Paul Hacker and founded a separate brewery under his own name. When Crown Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria was to celebrate his wedding in Munich in 1810, he decided it was an occasion for all of Bavaria to celebrate. He commissioned Josef Pschorr, then the brewmaster of the Hacker-Pschorr brewery, among other Munich brewers, to develop special brews to commemorate the occasion.

Subsequent annual celebrations evolved into the city of Munich’s Oktoberfest, which is attended by over six million people each year who consume millions of litres of beer. By Munich law, only the six breweries within the city limits of Munich are invited to serve their beer at Oktoberfest. Hacker-Pschorr is one of the six, as is its sister brand, Paulaner. Today’s event is held on land donated by Josef Pschorr.

Beer

Here we have a Weis beer, the German variation of Wheat Beer. Wheat beer is a beer, usually top-fermented, which is brewed with a large proportion of wheat relative to the amount of malted barley. The two main variants are Weissbier and Witbier. Weißbier (German - "white beer") based on the German tradition of mixing at least 50% wheat to barley malt to make a light colored top-fermenting beer, and witbier (Dutch - "white beer") based on the Belgian tradition of using flavorings such as coriander and orange peel. Belgian white beers are often made with raw unmalted wheat, as opposed to the malted wheat used in other varieties. Both German Weißbier and Belgian Witbier are called "white beers" because "wheat" has the same etymological root as "white" in most West Germanic languages (including English).

Hacker-Pschorr brews its beer according to the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot or Beer Purity Law, one of the strictest food regulations in the world. Barley, hops and water are the only ingredients allowed in beer. On 23 April 1516, the two dukes William IV and Ludwig X issued the Bavarian States Regulation, which also contained the Beer Purity Law and it states

We especially wish that henceforth everywhere in our cities, market towns and in the
countryside, no other ingredients are to be used in beer other than barley, hops and water.

They were opting for a better quality of beer and no longer wanted beer to contain psychoactive additives such as henbane, belladonna or opium. Even extract of the fly agaric mushroom or “magic mushrooms” used to hide a lack of fermentation was banned as an intoxicating component from use in beer.

For this Weissbier the wheat is grown in the Champagne Region and selected certified hops come from the Hallertau. The beer is found in a 0.5 lt bottle and contains 5.5% alcohol.

The Beeritual

Sometimes beer drinking could be a special occasion and we should form a small ritual. You have to plan and execute the plan to the last detail.

It could be the end of the week and after you finished your office duties you go to a favorite junk food joint to pick up some snack. You cannot have your beer without something to chew... And what better choice for this beer than some KFC hot wings. Ok, they were a lot of hot wings, but I was hungry and this is MY ritual , all right ???

Then you go to your home and get out of the fridge your beer. You open it … Not yet, you have a photoshoot, a post to write and some crypto-money to earn. Pick up a good angle , take some pictures and post them on various places.

Now you open your beer. It smells like Weis. The strong and distinct scent of a beer. You carefully pour it into the glass, cause you need more photos. Here’s a video on how to properly pour this kind of beer.

Now we have the perfect glass of beer. Orange shining body and a thick creamy white head. And some hot wings in the foreground. Dammit I’m hungry, but I have to take some more good shots.

I take a sip. It’s refreshing, sparkling and silky . Fruity in the beginning and ends up with a bitter tone. I love it !!!

Take another sip and start to devour the hot wings. They are a match made in heaven. The spicy chicken with the refreshing taste of the beer. In case you are wondering I like to watch food YouTubers so that I get ideas for recipes.

And like all wonderful things, this came to an end. If you thought I couldn’t handle 20 hot wings and some beer, think again … Piece of cake … And yes, I had some chocolate for dessert. Thanks for asking …
