Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Review

in #series5 years ago

During the Christmas period and as natural i watched a bunch of series and anime. One of them was the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. To tell you the truth i remember myself as a kid watching briefly a cartoon with a similar name which in reality was the same as with the series. The only thing i remembered from back then was a blond girl with a talking cat, nothing more, nothing less. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a Netflix production (and that comes with some drawbacks as well) that came out during October of 2018 and has 11 episodes in total that are around 50 minutes each.

Plot

The Show starts with Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) a half witch that is preparing to celebrate her 16 birthday, which means that she will take the Dark Baptism, become a full witch and declare her devotion to Satan. The reason as you can guess that she is a half witch is that her mother was mortal and father a warlock and a very famous one. I previously said "was" regarding her parents because they don't live due to an "accident".

She now lives with her 2 aunts, Aunt Hilda who is a very kind woman known for her vast knowledge in potion and her not so kind Aunt Zelda (fun fact:played by Miranda Otto from LOTR) and her cousin Ambrose. Sabrina goes to a mortal school, have mortal friends and a mortal boyfriend. Now the whole big deal and plot is what Sabrina's final choice would be, Mortality? Witchhood? or something in-between?

Pretty much that's summarize the whole plot. We get to see many substories along the way and understand the whole world of the witches and warlocks a bit better as well as see some pretty nasty demons along the way. Sabrina has to deal with a lot of things at her age, her aunts try to convince her that she should accept Satan and baptized and follow the footsteps of her father.

What I Liked & What I Didn't

Good Things

There are 2 things i liked the most in this film. The first one is that they have given a dark vibe in the whole show. In other words you can expect to see demon like creatures, jump scares and a lot of blood to be spilled. I strongly suggest to watch it during night. The whole witch thing worshiping Satan is quite entertaining to watch and also note that this takes place in 90s so once again the atmosphere is quite dark and awesome. The second thing i particularly liked is the cast. Each and single one of the actors are doing a pretty damn good job. Both the aunts are quite amazing as well as Sabrina and ofc Ambrose the cousin, although i have some bad things to say regarding the character , the actor portraying him is simply one of the best ones in the series. Finally, because i like to tell you everything, there will be a second season during 2019!

Bad Things

What i didn't like was the stupid agenda that Netflix keep pushes forward and that is to use minorities,lgtbq-r and all this stuff into production that never had even the slightest indication of having those types of people in their comics, cartoons, shows. For example the whole Spellman family that we get to see are whites but cousin Ambrose is a black bisexual warlock. Not only this came out of nowhere but there is literally no point. It doesn't add to the character absolutely nothing, especially if you were a fan of Sabrina long ago!

Also, the second and stupidest thing is the Feminism wave in the film. They tried to implement it in multiple forms that once again add nothing to the series, more likely make it lose some credits in my opinion. To be more specific we have one of Sabrina's closest mortal friends who dresses as a boy, have a boyish haircut and the big athletic boys of the school made fun of her so what's better to take revenge on them by using some magic and create a girl's club. Also, somehow the witches have issues with the warlock because apparently the leader is a man and it should be a woman? Literally we get to see around 50 witches and 3 warlocks in those 11 episodes but still men are the issue here.

Imagine that Sabrina's father was considered one of the greatest warlocks that helped a lot their society but still we keep forgetting that and let's blame the men as always. There is even a line somewhere that the witches can control every man because they are woman and somehow have power over them with the stupidest line to be "even Satan is a man"
